Hi,

I have heard that Pretty Things Beer Co. will be stopping production. Does anyone have information?

I know only what has been reported elsewhere, such as at Universal Hub and the Globe (Nov. 24 | Nov. 25)

They called their enterprise a "project" rather than a "company", suggesting that they never intended to create a permanent brewing operation.

Andy Crouch (@BeerScribe on Twitter) was working on a story about it before the news broke; he's said that their sales of 22 oz. bottles and keg sales were down, and there was a lot of professional backlash against their work on bringing light to the pay-to-play scandal. That, plus the fact that they didn't actually have a physical space of their own, caused them to move on. The owners brewed their last batch, sold their equipment, and are traveling for a year.

It's sad if there was professional backlash due to the pay-to-play thing. Pay-to-play doesn't really help the craft-brew industry. It just helps large companies.

*Takes off hat, solemnly*
So raise to me a parting glass,
and drink a health whate'er befalls.
Then gently rise, and softly call:
Good night, and joy be to you all.

It's likely the backlash was from the businesses that were receiving this largess. And those who were felt the system gave them an advantage.

Sad, yes, but credible.

They are also appearing at Ball Sq Fine Wines on Friday, Dec. 11th:

Beer: As many of you are already aware, our friends (and fellow Somervillians) Dann and Martha of Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project have announced that they will not be continuing with Pretty Things in 2016. They'll embark on a new adventure and we'll be very excited to see what they do next. In the meantime we are honored to host Dann and Martha this Friday night from 5:00-7:00pm for one of their last public appearances as the proprietors of Pretty Things. They'll taste the beer, share the love and answer what questions they can about the future. This will be special, this will be historic, this will be huge!
