FYI Dosa n Curry, the excellent vegetarian Indian restaurant on Somerville Ave has finally reopened, I guess a couple weeks ago, I just noticed it this weekend and it is just as great as before.

I had never heard of this. As a near lifelong vegetarian, and a huge fan of Indian food, I am quite intrigued!

yeah the menu looks fab. I wonder if the paper dosa is similar to a kind I had in London a couple of times. I never found any resto in the US that made it that way.

Unfortunately it's way out of my habitrail so it will require a special trip. When the weather is nice, I could walk there after work (I work in Central Square) and then pick up that bus that runs over to Porter (can't recall route number offhand), then would have to pick up my regular bus home over to Medford. A lot of trouble to go to for a meal.

Unfortunately, I think there was significant bad blood involving A4, the landlord, and Eversource and that's the real reason that A4 is now gone. I know that Eversource alleged that the equipment damage that shut down the whole building (which I believe included A4, Dosa n Curry, a beauty salon, and some apartments) was the fault of A4. I am not in a position at all to evaluate that allegation, but I do think that part of the reason the building was closed for so long was that none of the parties involved wanted to pay for the repair. In any case, whatever the state of these allegations, I think that everybody agrees that Dosa n Curry, the beauty salon, and the apartment tenants were innocent bystanders to the whole thing.

The paper dosa is... enormous. As in, it's about three feet long, I'd say. Very thin and crispy.

Definitely worth the trip there, though - their weekend buffet is always hopping and deservedly so. And it's so nice to not have to worry at all about anyone cross-contaminating meat into the veg dishes on the buffet!

wow that does sound like the Drummond Street dosa in London. The huge pleated fan on either side made me think of an elephant's ears defying gravity.

I just hate it when I'm at an Indian buffet and I go to get some raita and there are these streaks of vaguely chickeny looking stuff from where people have dripped.

Dosa n Curry's are rolled, not pleated, but it is definitely gravity-defying. :-)

For anyone contemplating driving there based on past experience, though, we noticed that the parking lot next to the building that they used to use is no longer available. (Fortunately, we were on foot, so it didn't impact us.)

Does the buffet have any dosas, idli, or vada on it? I've been to southern Indian buffets before that were mostly just curries.

I see that they have one of my all-time favorite Indian dishes -- chana batura. I'll have to get there soon!

Idli and vada are typically on the buffet.

Dosa come from their kitchen directly. If I'm remembering right, there's also a plain or masala dosa included with the buffet - at least, they used to do so - but depending how hectic they are you may need to request it, and it's worth confirming whether it's included or not.

Also worth noting is that they have a fair portion of "Indian style Chinese" on their menu, and often an item or two of it on the buffet. Basically, if you haven't experienced that, imagine what an Indian version of a Chinese restaurant would be (same as our local restaurant Chinese is not really all that much like food in China).

Awesome, thanks! I love Gobi Manchurian and used to get it at Namaskar. Indo-Chinese food is fascinating stuff.
