Several studies from mainstream financial institutions have concluded that fossil fuel divestment is the financially prudent thing to do. See:

As for tackling climate change, divestment has been used in many social movements, most prominently in the fight against apartheid in South Africa, and is one of many useful tactics for raising consciousness and putting pressure on decision makers.
