Somerville, Where the 4th of July is Celebrated in June

The city's annual pre-4th-of-July fireworks display will take place at Trum Field next Thursday, June 30, at about 9:15 pm. As usual, a street party on Broadway will precede the fireworks, starting at 6 pm, this year featuring the 215th Army Band, local Disco-Funk band Booty Vortex, the USO Metropolitan New York Performers, and the Somerville Sunsetters.

Also at Trum Field, the city's annual Family Fun Day will happen this Saturday, June 25, from noon to 4 pm, featuring community BBQ, pony rides, train rides, children’s activities, face painting, music, and more.

Unfortunately, I will not be doing the face painting. They must have found someone less expensive...,

I'm sorry to hear that :-( Was there a public application process? The Somerville Arts Council now runs this event; that wasn't always the case.

No application that I know of...the  Arts Council asked me to work for just tips for that event and for SomerStreets, and I can't afford to do that. I'll work for tips only for ArtBeat and probably Ignite,  but it's a freelance business,  not just a  fun hobby! I hope whoever they got doesn't use acrylic paint or craft glitter. Neither are made for skin.

So I casually mentioned to my California friend that it was Fireworks tonight and now he's really curious why we have fireworks on a *Thursday* of all nights.

And, uh, I realized so am I! Does anyone have insight to this strange tradition?

I don't know, but I'm going to guess that Somerville wanted a fireworks night of its own that would not be the same day as any other nearby town or city's event.
