Seeking a reasonably priced mendhi artist in the area to draw a fairly simple design on my lower back. I'm particularly interested in those artists who use indigo to replicate woading. Recommendations?
Aside from the making-you-crazy part? Woad sap can act as a hallucinogen on some people--I think it's a weird allergic affect. Something about numbness, dizziness, and lowering of inhibitions. They think it's the reason berserkers were so...berserk. The wisdom of the internet tells me that the blue part has no hallucinogenic properties, but I'm not aware of anyone who works with it. Maybe they got scared off.
Huh--cool. Yeah, I'd definitely be interested in trying it out. It's just that most of the henna artists I've researched so far use a different indigo plant.
The big local winter SCA market event ("Birka") is the 28th, in NH. I'm not going (I'm not currently active), but if it is possible to buy it over the winter, that would be the occasion. You might hook up with someone who is going, who might buy some for you. ISTR it's pretty cheap and comes with instructions. But I only know it to be reliably available in August.
Hey, I Googled my email address, and your entry came up on the first page, oddly enough.
I just wanted to let you know that I'm Heather, who Anders mentioned below, and I've used Ancient Blue crystalized indigo on a number of people to replicate woading. However, it's not such a good idea to use it on sensitive skin like your lower back, since the crystalized indigo is a potent chemical...
.....are you perchance the same person who emailed me a bit ago? It seems likely, actually...
