Last year on the Sunday afternoon of Open Studios weekend, [livejournal.com profile] dreams_of_wings and I wandered into the former Masonic temple at 115 College Ave, and were blown away. A Russian couple named Ekaterina Sorokina and Nicholas Shaplynko, both artists, had bought the place a few years earlier, and proceeded to paint the entire surface of the walls and ceilings with epic myths. I wanted to recommend it so much that, with only a few hours left before closing, I posted about it from my Treo (cell phone) with its little tiny keyboard.

It's on the map again this year, #21, on College Ave near Powder House Circle. Ekaterian and Nicholas live there full time, so open studios weekend is the only time of year they open their home to the public. Even if you're not doing open studios all day, take a half hour to see this one!

Oh, I've seen that one before, it's quite mind-blowing indeed. :)Stupid question: do you know where I can pick up a last-minute hardcopy of the Open Studios booklet thingy? (i.e., not the online version)

they will probably be available at some of the larger sites, such as Ciampa Manor.

I walk past that every day and always wonder about what's inside. I'll make a point of visiting.

here is their web site: Modern Renaissance

and here is a Boston Globe article about them from last year, including a good photograph of the interior.

At your recommendation I made this my first stop - and was completely blown away. I must have sat with my mouth hanging slightly open for the whole half hour+ that I was there. Thank you for sharing!!

Ah haha, I've lived in Davis for over two years now and never knew that there is something so incredible, so close to Davis. And last year I was away in CA during Open Studios, so completely missed the whole thing. I feel really blessed to be a Davis Square area resident, and hope that I'll get to stay in the area for a few more years.
