I am just curious what my options are for high speed internet in the area. I need wireless and we currently pay $90/mo for rcn (with no home line or cable tv). Verizon doesn't seem to be available. Are there any others? Thanks for any input!

Verizon is not the only DSL provider; there are also Speakeasy, Earthlink, Galaxy, and others. I use Galaxy.

How much do you pay a month?

There must be better deals out there than the $35/month I'm paying.

I'm paying $90 a month for basic cable TV and broadband together (about $45 for each) through Comcast. As for wireless, it really doesn't matter what provider you have. You just pick up a Wireless Broadband/DSL router from any computer parts place and you're set. The router's have gotten much cheaper...$50 - $100.

Just be sure to have someone who knows a bit about computers set the router up for you so you have some security protection. I can't tell you the number of wireless routers I have around my house that still have the factory default passwords set on them!

We used to have Comcast cable modem, but I hate them, they lie. It was cheaper for us to bundle the modem and basic cable than to have the modem alone, and it was around $65/month, I think?

We were also terminated by them for hosting our own website (oops). So now we're with Speakeasy. I love them, and they're pretty comparable in price. We're at a higher end package (NEED to downgrade that), but they're around $55-60/month, I believe.

We have AT&T DSL, I think, for about $60/month. I know there are better deals out there, but Roommate signed a farking contract with them..

Verizon is a pain in the ass to get set up with, but I finally got it for our apartment (near Powederhouse) and we are paying $20/month for their basic DSL. It is a one-year contract, but that was so much cheaper than what I had paid before ($60/month for Comcast) that it seemed worth it.

I think the deal was $20 set-up fee, $20/month for 12 months, with the first month free (so it worked out to be $20/month, no set-up fee).

The speed is not what I was getting with Comcast (I would say it is about 50-75% of Comcast), but Verizon does have a faster plan if you want it. Reliability has been acceptable, about the same number of problems as Comcast. Most of the problems seem to be based in the actual DSL modem they sent us, not with the service (unlike Comcast, where the problems tended to be on their end). For us, resetting the modem actually solves our problems 99% of the times.

One thing I can say in favor of Comcast is that the one time they had to send someone out, that person actually knew how to work on Macintosh computers (I work with them exclusively now, so it was nice to see Comcast supporting them, at least with this one tech). We have not had to have anyone from Verizon come out, so I cannot speak to the knowledge of their techs.

The contract does suck in the Davis area (I have lived in this apartment for less than six months, and I am moving in two weeks, and the bill is in my name) since they do charge an early disconnect fee. So I am going to have to work it out with the roommates for one of them to be responsible for it after I leave.

We have Earthlink DSL for around $40 a month. (I find that like cell phone bills taxes work out to be about 10% on DSL services.)

When it starts becoming unreliable again (as I'm sure it some day shall) I'll investigate alternate providers, but as I've gotten the thing stable I'm leaving it alone.

FIOS

Galaxy calls it $19.95/month for 768K (slow DSL), but with taxes and fees it's really more like $23/month. They have a more expensive, faster plan if you need it.

nuh unh, last i heard fios was being held up by a bunch of intransigent city councils that won't give verizon permission, and anyway, cambridge and somerville are behind several suburban towns in the queue.

I'm actually wondering why your RCN internet service is so expensive—ours is only $50/month. (also internet only.)

Wow--I pay ~$100 for internet, phone and ("basic") cable with one of the RCN bundles. Call them and get a better package!
