The Boston Globe is on pothole patrol, and we need your help.

If you know of a nasty pothole in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, or Somerville, take a photo and e-mail it as a jpeg to:

ciweek@globe.com

Please include the address and describe the location of the pothole, the date the photo was taken, and your own name. Photos and the results of our pothole hunt will be published in a future edition of City Weekly.

thanks,

Emily Sweeney

Jeesh, Em.... People are gonna get ticked off at me when I stop every 50 feet on Route 16 to get out and take a picture! ;)

or how about a rolling video of the entire stretch of where Curtis Street becomes Winthrop Street behind Tufts University? Hehe!

Do you think we could nominate whole streets?

yeah, my favorite is westbound Washington St. in Somerville where it passes under McGrath Hwy. I drive a car with expensive rims (BMW 3-series with Sport Package and OEM rims) and I'm surprised I'm not buying some new rims after that one.

rolling video of the riverway and jamaicaway. I saw an SUV bottom out there last night . . .

not recently, 6 years ago now, i was on the jamaicaway heading to Angell w/ a very ill cat. hit a pothole, and gosh, the car suddenly got a lot louder.

hole in the muffler. as if i hadn't enough problems at that point.

(and the cat survived that episode, but wasn't around for long after that, *sniff*)

Somerville Avenue in front of Target isn't much fun. Nor is westbound Union Square (I don't know whether to call this Somerville Avenue or Washington Street) approaching Bow Street.

[btw: does your username refer to motorcycles or bicycles?]

Like I said in an earlier comment to a comment, the Riverway-Jamaicaway stretch is pretty crappy in general, but right about here (http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/#maxp=search&mvt=h&q1=42.33558,-71.109664&trf=0&lon=-71.109669&lat=42.3356&mag=1) was something that bottomed out an SUV last night. Inbound right hand lane, about four to five feet wide, easily 4-6 inches deep.

Oh, man, Rt 16. Belmont isn't one of the towns specified but if you're looking for awful potholes...except for that recently, miraculously resurfaced shunk, rt 16 is the surface of the moon.

Back when I was buying my current commuting bike, I bought a hybrid instead of a road bike *solely* because of Rt 16 -- I knew a road bike would never survive it. Even though I think that road singlehandedly added $100/year to my maintenance costs. Thank goodness I have found a route that avoids it now.

The thing that really gets me is it's been this bad for years. And every year, someone's done some kind of major work on it -- putting in a new utility line, or building a retaining wall -- something that has necessitated tearing up huge chunks of road. And they've patched but have not, by and large, taken the opportunity to resurface. It's just gotten worse and worse and worse.

Maybe I can get the little one on Mass Ave at Porter I stepped in this morning, thereby saturating my foot.

Yay for Gore-Tex boots is all I can say.

Shunk? Shunk??!?! How the heck did I say "shunk"? What is a shunk?

I think I meant to say "stretch".

(Accessing LJ from my work is...not the easiest thing...and doesn't have the best interface.)

I lived in Belmont for a little over a year and never understood why a town that is supposedly so well-off financially can't take care of their streets.
And I think a shunk could be 'a shiny hunk of road.' Which works out very well to what you were saying. :)
