Following the release of his new “Spells from a Broken Wand” CD, wizard rocker Alex Carpenter is on a solo acoustic tour, wending his The Remus Lupins eastward from LA to the NYC/Boston corridor. When he arrives in Boston, his first stop is a used bookstore and rightly so, since as part of the wizard rock genre, The Remus Lupins plays songs that are inspired by the Harry Potter series. Carpenter and his The Remus Lupins embrace the fact that reading has become cool again. Since Carpenter’s mission is to add a rocking edge to this happy phenomenon, “Fight Evil, Read Books” has become his rule to live by.

Besides what may be considered a “teaser” concert at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers, other local appearances of Alex Carpenter and his The Remus Lupins are:
--Sunday, July 2, 3:00 pm: The Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge ($5, all ages show).
--Sunday, July 2, 8:15 pm: TT the Bear’s Place, 10 Brookline St., Central Sq., Cambridge ($7, 18+ show)

The Remus Lupins music is rooted in a deep respect for melody and harmony, reminiscent of everything from the Beatles to Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Decemberists. The Remus Lupins, along with Draco & the Malfoys and Harry & the Potters, is considered one of the vanguard bands of the full fledged wizard rock scene. The music is upbeat and feel good without ever devolving into mindless fluff. Carpenter’s music is very mindful of its muse, Remus J. Lupin, a central character in the Harry Potter series. Professor Lupin was teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts during Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts Academy. He is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix and is a werewolf.

According to Carpenter, Remus Lupin is “so well intentioned, always wanting to do the right thing. Inside of him, there is this darkness though, something out of his control that people really can connect to.” In a similar vein, Carpenter’s The Remus Lupins is able to sing feel good tunes that simultaneously explore very poignant emotional issues.

Ohhhhhmygod I can't believe there is ANOTHER harry and the potters. Is this becoming some kind of rock sub-genre?

Hello, Mary and welcome to Davis Square LiveJournal!

One piece of friendly advice: if you post a long announcement like this one, you should use the "lj-cut" tag so that only part of it displays on the community page, and a user can click on a link to see the rest of the post. This page explains how to use the lj-cut tag.

(By the way, Mary's band, the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society, will be marching up and down Chester Street tomorrow evening, from Redbones to someone's house in Cambridge, and back again. It's related to the Redbones bicycle party tomorrow.)

Carpenter and his The Remus Lupins embrace the fact that reading has become cool again.

D'you think that sometimes, at night, alone in the long anxious dark, Alex Carpenter is haunted by the fear that maybe reading is still uncool, and this has all been a terrible mistake?

This is a very long posting. Could you put most of it behind an lj-cut (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=75), please? Thanks.
