As for sheet metal -- if very thin metal is acceptable, gutter flashing is a reasonably cheap way to go. You can get it at, eg, Home Depot, in 6"x10' rolls in both copper and aluminum. I've used aluminum flashing for a lot of basic crafty tasks, from making engraved door signs to repairing holes in an old charcoal grill. Handle only with gloves, though: The edges are very sharp indeed.
