On the subject of dogs as well (since the last post here reminded me), can anyone recommend shelters/places that are good for adoption in and around the area? As of now, I'm only familiar with the shelter in the Back Bay (Boston) area and the MSPCA in Jamaica Plain.

i liked Buddy Dog (http://www.buddydoghs.com/). i didn't get my dog there, but they always seemed nice & helpful when we went to look for a dog.
(we ended up getting a dog through craigslist. his owners had to get rid of him or they'd be evicted. he is the BEST dog ever. don't discount craigslist. there are some good ones on there.)

I totally second Buddy Dog. We've gotten all but one of our past/current dogs there (The dog in my userpic was adopted from there in late July). [Unknown site tag] volunteered there when he was younger. They're helpful, thorough, and they're always getting more dogs in. It's easy to walk around and look at the dogs, and they have very good descriptions up on the kennels. You can take the dogs on a great little trail in their back woods, and they have a fenced-in space to let the dogs run around so you really get to know their personality.

we got our awesome dog from Northeast Animal Shelter (http://www.northeastanimalshelter.org) in Salem. They're a no-kill shelter, which is pretty cool and worth supporting. They work with a great organization called Save A Sato (http://saveasato.org), which rescues dogs off the streets of Puerto Rico and brings them up here to be adopted. Our dog is a sato and is the sweetest, non-barkingest, most fantastic dog ever. Satos are also adoptable at Sterling Shelter (http://www.sterlingshelter.org) in Sterling, MA.
