That's really tough. What's worse is I think it would be hard to get a second opinion (of course that's just my opinion - but I wonder about one dentist criticizing the work of another, etc. - esp. if there is a potential legal action involved).
I go to Maurice Zylber in Central Square and I have found him to be mostly 100% client centered, etc. He has sent back crowns that didn't fit, rather than trying to get me to fit... though there have been a few times when I felt like he might have been rushing or cutting corners. That's the thing that is so frustrating: it's hard to know. You can't exactly ask: "Ah... are you doing shoddy work?"
It does sound like your fiance's experience is extreme. One thing I have learned over the years: write letters so that you have a paper trail - don't rely on conversations alone.
