A lot of the posts in this community star with "where can I..."

I thought it would be pretty cool if we made a map of all our favorite stuff in and around Davis. Pooled our knowledge together in one spot, on a map.

Davis Square Map Project

You don't have to register or anything to add to this map. You can just add Places to it. All the places will be added by "One davis Square Lover" (is that lame?) so if you want credit for your contribution you should put your name in the Place description. You can also write html in the descriptions, so go ahead an link to your LJ profile or whatever.

I would love to share moderation of the map with a couple other people. Anyone interested in having editor controls over the stuff that gets added?

I tried twice to add the Somerville Theatre (first at "55 Davis Square", then at "Holland Street and Dover Street". Both times, it put the arrow on the wrong side of the street. So I deleted it. What's the right way to do this?

Also, it should be Sacco's Bowl-Haven, not Socco's.

A larger-scale Google maps integrated business review service can be found at yelp.com. It's the one I started using when I moved to Davis, and it's helped me find all kinds of cool stuff to do in the area (as well as meet some great people).

You're doing it right, Ron. It's the geocoder which figures out where to put the address, that is screwing up. These things are imperfect. It was actually plotting that address out in the middle of the street.

They don't have adding places by clicking on the map through Mapkit, but they do on platial. I added it in the right spot and I even found some pictures. Give it a comment.

Yelp is all right. I use it sometimes. I still think it's fun to make a map together, though.

But now it says "Davis Square Theater" instead of "Somerville Theatre", so Platial is still confused.

I'd like this map better if it was larger, and larger scale. Right now all the arrows are crowded together. Also, it still says "Socco's" and "Davis Square Theater".

I wonder if I can fiddle with the css on the Blogger site to make it wider. I'm a little bit afeared of css.

By the way, Ron, I was dedinitely thining of you (but not only you) when I asked if anyone sould like to share editorship control of the stuff that gets added to the map. If you want ze powah, let me know and I'll email you the log in and pwd for Blogger and for Platial. Then you can change stuff, correct mistakes, remove stuff from the map, whatever. I just added a few pictures and some business hours and links to websites. But I definitely don't care a whit about owning this information and I think the more gardeners the better.

I also made some comments on a few of the places other people have added.

The map widget is a brand new thing in alpha phase, so there are bound to be things that aren't perfect. I notice that line breaks are not being converted, for example. That's a drag, but I think it will get fixed.
