Three houses hit by fire in Medford

MEDFORD — A spectacular four-alarm fire damaged at least four houses in Medford this afternoon, displacing 12 to 15 families.

The fast-moving fire, believed to have started at 7 Capen St., burned three triple-decker homes and damaged a fourth building. Flames could be seen shooting out of windows. Everyone got out and no injuries were reported, said Medford Deputy Fire Chief Martin Cunniff.

Broadcast reports said a mother and her six children were among those who fled to safety.

The afternoon fire, first reported at approximately 2:55 p.m., took more than 4.5 hours to control, said Cunniff. Several other fire departments helped, including Boston, Malden, Somerville, Winchester, Arlington and Stoneham.

WBZ-TV reported that dirtbikes stored under the Capen Street home may have exploded, sparking the blaze. However, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross was on the scene to help displaced families.
