We had another petty theft last night, as someone (or ones) stole change, Altoids, and perhaps other things from a car parked in our drive on Kidder Ave. This is the second time this particular car has been burgled, though it seems possible that both times the door had been left unlocked.

Have others in Davis experienced problems like this?

Last week I noticed that the door handle/lock had been busted on my car. I'm on the corner of Rogers/Kidder. It didn't seem like they successfully got in though. Nothing was taken. I had golf clubs and change in there. I would love to find out who did this.

Not to be a dick, but if you're leaving the doors unlocked, you're lucky it's just spare change and some mints...

He didn't. It wasn't his car. And you are being a dick.

Locked Doors

I live not too far from Kidder, I never ever lock my car doors, and I've never had anything stolen.

My car lock is busted and has been for months. I probably wouldn't notice if someone took mints and change out of my car, actually. If they could find stuff worth stealing in the mess I've got in there.

Myabe you should try covering the floor with toys, sand, food, and assorted trash and driving around with a wet dog for a couple months. It seems to work as a deterrant for us.

I had the same thing happen once -- they took a NIN tape and probably about $3 in change and left a cigarette smell, but this was on Broadway and it seems likely that the door was left unlocked accidentally. It felt like the kind of breakin that a 14-year-old would commit with a friend.

Some people consider leaving the door unlocked a feature, since sometimes the very worst damage is caused by the thief breaking your window for a chance to rummage through the car. $30 stereo, $500 window repair.

Someone's picking locks on cars around where Cedar St. and Summer St. meet.

They're only choosing cars that don't have car alarms, picking the locks to take whatever they want (mints, change, stashed toll cash), and closing the door again.

Our non-alarmed car got hit, as did the guy across the street, who told us of other cars that got hit.
