I did not go to the last Wall of Respect meeting, but I'm on their mailing list. Here's what they sent me today:

The next meeting of the Wall of Respect for Women Mural Project will be on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 6:30 - 8 PM at the Nathan Tufts Field House at Powderhouse Circle. Quyen Truong from Artists for Humanity will present information about steps, tasks, funding etc. for a mural project, and what she and her organization might be able to provide.

Please see below for notes from our last meeting

Wall of Respect for Women Mural Project
Notes from November 15, 2006 Meeting

Present: Joan Batzek, Lori Jean Batzek, Mary Stone, Katie Leavitt, Mary Lu Mendonca, Rebekah Gewirtz, Kate Cloud, Julie Schneider

Updates

Legal: Mary Lu Mendonca, Director of the Somerville Human Rights Commission, gave out copies of a summary of VARA (Visual Artists’ Rights Act) and a summary of MAPA (Mass. Arts Presentation Act). Mary Lu’s notes describe how the destroyed mural may or may not have been legally protected. It is not clear if there is a legal case and Mary Lu recommends contacting the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. The group agreed to proceed. Kate C. will contact the Vol. Lawyers for the Arts.

Brooks: Kate L. was present representing Brooks. She reported that she did not know when Brooks would transfer to Rite-Aid however she was fairly certain it will be in ‘07.

Arts Council: There was no representative from the Arts Council. The group decided it was important to have them present in the future because of their expertise and help with direction.

CVS Site: Julie S. reported on her discussion with city Economic Development employee Alice Martin. Alice was able to review a draft of the plans that were approved by the city planning board and the zoning board of appeals. The plans do contain one brick wall façade, one story high. Which wall and the size will have to be researched, and whether this wall would make a preferred location is still unclear. Joan B. will call the owner of the parcel and report at the next meeting. The owner is Kris Oganowsky (sp?) at 444 Somerville Ave.

Structure/Process

The group agreed on the importance of having potential artists involved early in our process. Quyen Truong, a Somerville resident employed by Artists for Humanity, had inquired early about the project to Rebekah G. Rebekah suggested that we invite her to the next meeting for a more formal presentation of steps, tasks, funding etc. and what she and Artists for Humanity could provide. Julie agreed to contact Quyen and try to find a time for the presentation. Our next meeting date will depend on Quyen’s availability.

The group decided to hold off on setting up committees until we are clearer on the tasks.

Please note: Quyen has agreed to present her information on Wednesday, December 13, 6:30 – 8 PM.
