Are there any jewelers in the area (even further into Boston, if there's no one local) who work with/can fix ivory? I have a bracelet with a cracked bead, and I'd like to get the bead fixed somehow--or the bracelet restrung without it. Are there jewelers around who could do this? How much does something like that cost?

(Before anyone jumps on the "ivory is poaching and you're evil for owning it" train, I should point out that this is fossilized mammoth ivory; the animal very clearly was done using it several thousand years ago.)

you could fill the crack with superglue, then wet sand with a piece of 2000 grit sandpaper. probably. if you have to destring it, then the same can be done to the single bead, hole cleaned up, and strung - can't say how yours is strung to comment, shouldn't be hard. should not cost a lot either.

i can't recall if plain FMI is porous or not, but often, some of the natural materials can be protected some with a mineral oil or other treatment, and kept from extremes of heat, sun, and humidity.

good luck.
