I thought I had read something about this before and just went on the city's website to confirm. Just hope none of you get boned from this....

Street Sweeping & Street Sweeping Parking Enforcement Extended Through December 31, 2006

The street sweeping parking enforcement season, which begins on April 1, has been extended through December 31 this year. Street sweeping is an essential public works activity that not only keeps the city looking cleaner, but reduces the risk of flooding and icing due to catch-basin clogging and storm drain back-up. In past years, the period of street sweeping parking enforcement ended on November 30th, but trends toward warmer weather have enabled the city to extend the period of enforcement through December 31st.

Streets will not be swept in December unless weather conditions permit. If the city declares a Snow Emergency during December, Snow Emergency parking regulations will take precedence, and sweeping will be temporarily suspended.

During the months of January, February, March, the city may sweep the streets if conditions permit, but street sweeping parking regulations are not enforced during these winter months.

Yep, I posted it some weeks ago. (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/693353.html)

I don't suppose you know how to get on the phone-notification thingie for Somerville? I bet Ron knows.

This isn't new for this year? All our signs have said Dec. 31st for at least a year, and I'm fairly sure last year we were switching sides in December as well...

It is new for a lot of areas.

I dont wanna comment in the older link...like I said, it is because of a milder winter.

Also, tickets for street sweeping in Somerville are $50 not $100 like someone posted in the other link.

Ahh, I wondered why people seemed so surprised. I am almost entirely sure it's not new on our street - how odd that it would be different in different neighborhoods.

I think pheromone means the city having a machine call with whatever message they think is important. Last night I got a phone reminder about the street cleaning.

I was confused about that too; it was through December on my street last year. I guess it makes some sense, since I live on a high-traffic street.

Yep, that is indeed what I meant. I don't have a landline but I want to get my cell on the list.

Street sweeping is such a scam. What a waste of energy and other city resources. The streets do not need to be cleaned more than a few times a year, usually, and if they do, they could easily be cleaned by hand by a small team of teenagers or retired folks or other people who don't want or can't have a full time job. One big machine could be shared by several cities and only sent out when there was some really difficult stuff to clean up, on an as needed basis.

"boned"?

The best way to stop street sweeping is to stop littering. I personally love it when it's street sweeping day!

not easily offended (by a long shot) but I hadn't heard that expression before.

I *guess* I might have a bit of a problem with the metaphor of gender politic reasons if it came to it but my comment was just because I didn't parse the reference immediately.
