hey,

1. has anyone read about the midnight madness sale going on in the square tomorrow night? what stores are worth going to and are involved?

2. whats the closest full grocery store to the square?

3. are there any not-permit parking streets near the square? whats the closest way to park near the square w/out a permit?

& if a lot with meter parking says "8am to 8pm" does that mean you can only park there 8-8, or that you only have to pay the meter from 8-8?

Please comment!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!

For meters in the square, you only have to pay from 8am to 8pm. The rest of the time you can park there for all 12 hours if you like. There is a lot behind Brooks that is open in the evenings (timed during the day .. I think two hours). Otherwise, most of it is Somerville sticker parking.

As for a grocery store, Shaw's/Star Market at Porter is the biggest closest one. There's also Pemberton Farms on Mass Ave (closer, organic, smaller selection).

Don't know about the midnight madness...

There's a public pay lot across from Orleans on Holland St.

The closest full-size grocery is the Shaw's at Porter Square, although there's also a FoodMaster or some such on Broadway at the corner with the Alewife Brook Parkway. And of course there are delis (Sessa's, Dave's Fresh Pasta) and two small food markets (McKinnon's and Farmer's Bounty) on Elm St that have a full, although narrow, range of groceries. (Farmer's Bounty has a lot of Indian food and spices, which is nice, but their staples are more expensive).

Depending on time of day (or side of Davis Square) it can be a shorter drive to the Foodmaster on Broadway past Teele Square. It's definitely further than the Shaw's but parking is much easier.

lists the stores and other information about tomorrow night's midnight madness (some portion of which benefits the Somerville Homeless Coalition.)

Here's some more info I posted a little while back:

http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/726895.html

If you go to any store that's participating you can pick up a flyer that lists other participating stores and a map of where they are located.

Hope some of you will visit Magpie! Here's where you can see some of the newest stuff we've just gotten in the store:

It's too bad more stores aren't participating.. then again, there aren't all that many retail stores left in Davis.

2. Porter Square Shaw's, as other people have said. But also check out the two Pemberton stores across the city line on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge. Pemberton Farms is on the north side of Mass. Ave. between Day and Dover Streets. Pemberton Market is on the other side of Mass. Ave., at the corner of Rindge Ave.

&. In Davis-area parking lots, meters are in effect from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday through Saturday. Parking is free at other times of day. Meters on streets are in effect from 8 am to 6 pm.

there is also a public metered lot on Day St.; one near the building that houses Au Bon Pain, across the street from Orleans off of Holland; small metered lots on Grove St. and Cutter Ave. (both cross between Highland and Elm); a few metered spots in the gap by the lights where Elm and Summer split; metered street parking all over the square; and a few small patrons-only lots behind some of the Davis Sq. businesses, which is fine presuming you're patronizing the applicable shop(s).

Aren't the meters hours 8am to 6pm?

Not any more. The hours have been extended for much the same reason street sweeping has been extended: more ticket revenue.

8 am to 6 pm on streets, but 8 am to 8 pm in parking lots.
