is there any way to contest a "trash out early" violation? it was for about a month ago, so i have NO idea what the "early trash" may have been. we never take out our barrels or recycling bins until the night before, after 8 pm (we're on a monday pick-up schedule), and we always take the empties back in by monday evening. this citation was for a thursday evening. i can't imagine what it could have been for.

any advice would be great. thanks.

I read somewhere that you're not allowed to take the trash out before 4 p.m. the day before pickup. I can't find that now though, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

Anyway, certainly sounds like you're well within that normally.

How could they know it was your trash?

As a possibility, did a neighbor move out last month leaving a bunch of trash at the curb early?

I wound up with the same citation...

After those of us downstairs blaming the upstairs folk, and after the upstairs folk blamed those of us downstairs, I caught my neighbor a few months later putting his trash/recycling on my side of the driveway.

I'm guessing it was just a cursory estimation that it belonged to the house the trash was parked in front of.

Regardless, you'd be surprised at what kind of identifying trash people wind up throwing away. A simple junk mail envelope is enough to track you down with.

"Yes sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie... I put that envelope under that pile of garbage."

I second the moving neighbor theory. It really sounds like no effort was made to determine who should get spanked other than a cursory check at the house number.

Cambridge has started a "no trash at all before 6pm, and no trash without rat-safe lids before 6 am" campaign. Is Somerville doing similarly?

I still don't understand. How does Cambridge know who put it there?
