I'm just looking for places in Davis or Porter to get some work done on my laptop...what are some free wireless spots in the area? Cafes, etc? Thanks!

I haven't used these but O'Naturals (while it lasts - maybe gone by now) and Porter Sq. Books have free wifi. Be nice if Diesel did but I guess it would be more packed than it is now. Sherman's in Union Sq. does too.

A few years ago there was a "Davis Sq Wireless" project that was essentially people making their nodes accessible but I haven't heard anything about that for quite a while.

Grand Prix Cafe, on Mass. Ave. between Day and Dover streets. The place is small and has very good food, so please support it financially when you visit.

I second True Grounds. Good food and a good environment.
They close around 7ish, however.

I third True Grounds.

And I must say I do love the Boston Ave, on Rose, toasted.

Another vote here for GP - the owner is a great guy, the food is good, and he makes a brilliant cup of coffee.

If you want a little trek, Darwin's - two locations near Harvard sq - is lovely and has free wifi.

O'Naturals has pretty mcuh closed, and Porter Square books only has free wifi from 6-9pm, fyi. But Sherman's and True Grounds and Grand Prix Cafe (Mass Ave by Porter) and the Somerville Public Library all have free wifi whenever they're open.

that place is so obnoxious though (in design and general concept, that alone has prevented me from going in)

What's obnoxious about it? (Especially if you haven't even gone in?)

I think you should give it a chance. The food is good, the owner is friendly, and it has free Wi-Fi. Support your local small business, or it will go away.

I second Darwin's. The one I go to is on Cambridge Street (cross Harvard yard, cross Quincy Street, and it's a few blocks up - or you can take the bus from the Holeyoke gate). Awesome staff and great food and coffee. But if you want something local, i-cafe in Teele Square has free wi-fi. And crepes.

What are the hours of this place? I'd like to check it out sometime but I'm always at work. :-/

They close at 10 pm. I think they open at 7 am but I'm not sure. I thought I'd find the hours on their web site, but I don't see them.

Grand Prix Cafe is a lot closer to Davis than Porter - it's between Day St. and Dover St. on Mass. Ave.

And so presumably, the one replacing O'Naturals will too, when it opens.

I fourth True Grounds! But please for the love of all things good, order beverages/food and consider asking other lone laptop users to share a table. There is nothing more annoying than trying to go for a nice little meal with a friend or two and realizing there are no tables because there are 10 being taken up by individual laptop users with a single empty cup of coffee each.

I am afflicted with the same troubling malady

I won't go into that bar Spirit on Mass Ave. because I'm horrified that they used a "Magic Marker" font for their storefront signage!

let us declare war on all things tacky in the camberville area. It'll mostly be an emo war, and as such, highly ineffectual.

I fifth True Grounds! But, darn it, we're all giving away this great secret of Ball Square--there won't be seats left when the word gets out. The sandwiches are fab--request the Boston Ave or Pearson toasted on 7-grain and you will not be disappointed. Try the "everything cookie" for a little extra sumthin'. Also, the staff are friendly and accommodating.
