I need to find a bakery that makes the best Cakes around.  Sadly, Party Favors in Brookline closes for the first week of the year and they have really really good cakes. Where is the best place to get a delicious B-day cake in Somerville or Cambridge?

I like Lyndell's in Ball Square, at Broadway and Willow.

I recommend Lyndell's, on Broadway in Ball Square in Somerville.
Their cakes are so moist and delicious!

Rosie's

Rosie's, on Mass Ave or in Inman Square, is quite good but a little pricey. I agree about Party Favors but think it's partially just the sheer volume of frosting they use...

Seconding Lyndell's in Ball Square. Delicious, and they'll also get creative and make any cake you want.

Arthur's on Main street in Medford is also tasty. Their macaroons are also quite good.

Yeah, them. I couldn't have it due to allergies, but I brought a Kahlua cake from there to a party and it went over quite well. I believe "demolished" is the most accurate verb, here. Their black and white (chocolate with vanilla frosting) one is basic and delicious, too. Pretty good prices for tasty stuff.

Have you been to Modern Bakery in Medford Sq? Their macaroons are great...but they are the kind that's chewy and almond-y, not mounds of sweetened coconut, so it depends on the kind you like.
I was less than impressed with Arthur's, but it's possible I got something that just wasn't their specialty. I'm not going back to try again because the girl wiped her nose before reaching in to grab my food with the same hand. Uh. No.

I am actually not a fan of coconut so I'm guessing you got a batch that has been unlike any I've ever had there.

That's pretty gross with the hand though.

Sorry, that was misleading; I have not, in fact, tried their macaroons at Arthur's. I was going on what most people seem to think macaroons are, which is mounds of coconut.

Gosh! I'd never heard of any other (non-coconut) kind of macaroon, but the wikipedia entry is very enlightening. Neat!

You evil, evil person.
You gave me yet another thing to get lost in Wiki-land looking up.
(Though...I didn't know any of that--I always wondered about the almond/coconut difference...thanks! Now, though, I'm curious about this "macaroon biscuit" thing...)

When we get bakery cakes for birthdays or celebrations, it is always from the Greek bakery in East Arlington. Take the 77 bus, or walk up Mass Ave to Lake Street (across from the Capitol Theater) if the weather is ok. For children's birthday's (and for me! I love it beyond reason), they usually make us a cake with banana custard and raspberry filling, with a chocolate rum cake for the most decadent adults.

You might also check out La Contessa on Highland Avenue (next door to Blue Shirt)
