Hello!

I am returning to Davis Square after some time away in suburbia. I am moving in this Monday, the 15th. Unfortunately, I have not yet received my change-of-address stickers from the registry and this impacts my ability to get a resident parking sticker for Somerville.

I am looking for an off-street place, close to the new apartment (which is actually a 3/4 mile hike up from the square toward Teele square) to park my car for a few days next week until I get the stickers and can get my own permit.

I'm willing to pay something for a week's worth of parking or bake you a pie or owe you a favor or something.

I'm somewhat reluctant to post my exact address in a public forum but if you have such a spot and live in the Teele Squarish area, please send me an e-mail. Thanks! :)

Endicott Street in Teele doesn't have permit parking.

Welcome back! If you call the Traffic & Parking department and explain the situation, I'm sure they'll give you a grace period. We've had several tenants do this, and they've never had a problem. You just need to call BEFORE you move...don't wait until you get a ticket.

When they gave me a grace period several years ago, when I moved to Davis, they just recorded it. I still got tickets, but when I went to the traffic and parking office to pick up my permit they also dismissed the tickets.

I was able to set it up over the phone, so presumably they have access to the RMV's records to verify the new address.

Non-permit parking streets do exist, I know, though the only one I'm sure about is Albion Street (which is not convenient to your general area). I notice there's lots of "foreign" cars parked there regularly, like the one with the Alaskan plates. Good luck!

Teele Square is a good bit under 3/4 mile from Davis Square, so I'd guess that where you are, a number of the streets dont' actually have permit parking. Many streets between Teele and Rt 16 (Endicott, Farragut, about .6m from the T) don't require permits.

Somerville isn't comprehensive with the permit-or-meter-just-about-everywhere the way Cambridge is, so odds are you won't have too much difficulty. Good luck!

Welcome Back

I just left that neighborhood. Very nice. While I was living there I made this map of a lot of the stuff I like/noticed/found useful. Maybe it can be of some use to you now.

Map of Teele Square Area (http://teelesquare.blogspot.com/).

(I added the free parking streets I didn't know about.)

It has mostly stuff like the pretties peonies in town, and sights along the Alewife Brook, but not only.

Stickers not needed?

I moved to Davis from Cambridge a couple of years ago (Sept '04). I changed my address w/ the RMV, but never actually got the physical stickers. Lord knows, I filled out the stupid form several times, but the stickers never came.

However, the physical stickers aren't actually that important. I got my permit without them. From what I understand Traffic & Parking checks your registration with the RMV database to confirm your address. So as long as your Somerville address is in the database, it doesn't matter if it's on your license or whatever. I just took in my lease and registration and was able to get the permit after explaining to them that I had changed my address with the RMV already but didn't have the stickers yet. So give that a try if you get a chance on Monday, you may find that you don't have to wait for the stickers after all!

Good luck and welcome back!

The whole area up on Prospect Hill is free street parking. It's less helpful to folks in Teele Square, but in a pinch you can always take the 88 bus home from your car :-)

Last time I checked (October-ish), they give you a hang-tag to put on your rear-view. They told me 7 days when I talked to them, but it's possible they changed that.
