Does anyone know of any cat breeders in the area? Specifically, I am looking for British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs, Scottish Folds, Maine Coons, or Ragdolls. But I'm interested in checking out other breeds as well, so I'm open to lots of types of breeders.

What? This post has been up for over an hour with no breeder vs. shelter flamefest? I would like to congratulate the honorable members of the davis square community for their restraint -- it's at times like these we can really feel proud of not being b0st0n.

(Also, while in no way proseletyzing, I'd like to mention that we have cats who are quite clearly ASHs and Maine Coons that came form the local shelters, so if it's just breed characteristics that're important to you and not papers, you can probably find what you want at a shelter. Moreover, there are a number of breed-specific rescue organizations: http://mainecoonrescue.net/ and http://www.mainecooncatrescue.org/ are two examples. But this is in the order of informing, not proseltyzing; no flames intended.)

I got my maine coon from the animal rescue league. Then, to balance out the perfection of a maine coon, I adopted a one-eyed little midget-cat with a giant sagging boob.

To answer your question though, no, I don't know of any breeders. I'll second the recommendation to check out shelters, but those cats will be neutered and spayed.

Also, just to fend off any possible flames hiding in waiting, I want to clarify that I am looking for specific breed characteristics, but not a pedigreed, papered cat. I will gladly go to a shelter like the ones mentioned above. I just have a lot of experience with cats and I know which ones are most likely to be happy in my home.

My family breeds both Maine Coons and Ragdolls. They live in Rhode Island, so they're not breeders in the Davis Square area. However, we have one of each breed in our apartment in Davis Square. They are both amazing cats.
