Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities in the area?  I'm specifically thinking of things like soup kitchen/homeless shelter for serving food more so than helping with issues organizations.  I prefer something with actual interaction with the people in need where I can see the results right in front of me.

I know you said you'd be interested in soup kitchens, etc. but wondered if you would consider volunteering in the schools, or through one of the many organizations in the city working with children. You would certainly see results, and there are many, many needy families and needy children in the schools right now. There are many who crave any extra attention they receive from adults. Just a thought.....

www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org is great. I volunteered with them for a very long time. Playing with little kids hardly felt like work, but it made a big difference to them to have stability. There are lots of tutoring programs out there as well.

I volunteer at the Food Pantry at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Harvard Square. Show up around 9:30-10am if you'd like to help out.

where is the catholic church in the square? is there volunteering every day or just on certain days? is there a volunteer coordinator I could talk to there? :-) thanks!

there is also an organization called boston cares which runs one-off volunteering opps all over the boston/cambridge area. they are great to check out as they have many ongoing activities/opportunities.

I'm not sure who the overall coordinator is for the Pantry. The person who coordinates volunteers from our church is Christian Alcala <cmalcala1989@yahoo.com> . You could email him if you like.

The pantry is open every Saturday, so that's generally the only time to volunteer. There's not really a need to arrange beforehand....you'd be very welcome if you just showed up around 9:30 (that's when the delivery truck arrives).

Location: See map. St. Paul's Church is a block from Harvard Yard, at the corner of Bow and Arrow Streets. Coming from Harvard Square, head down Mt. Auburn Street and you will see St. Paul's tall, brick bell tower on the left side of the road at DeWolfe Street. Coming from Boston, take Massachusetts Ave., turn left onto Bow Street (at the Grafton or at The Inn at Harvard). St. Paul's is straight ahead. The Harvard Catholic Center is next to St. Paul's Church at 20 Arrow Street. The Catholic Center can also be entered from 29 Mt. Auburn Street at the other end of the building.

Somerville Homeless Coalition

Just thought I'd add a little more info to the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) suggestion. Volunteers can help the staff of Project Soup (an SHC program) serve dinner on Mondays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It's run by a woman named Sandy at 89 College Ave. in Davis Square at the First Congregational Church.

also community servings (www.servings.org). not sure what kind of transportation options you have, but I think public transit can get you there. they serve meals to house-bound people with serious illnesses. it's good because they serve every day and they need volunteers all day long, so you can fit it into your schedule whenever you can.
