Hey neighbors,

Looking for some suggestions on where to get some clothes altered nearby. I have my first real grown-up interview on the 9th (i'm being flown somewhere ooooh), and I need some pants hemmed and the sleeves on a shirt taken in... not from the cuff though, but so they're skinnier. I live right off of Mass Ave. I'd like a place i can drop it off Monday and pick it up by Thursday (this is all very sudden for me, so I couldn't really plan ahead). I definitely don't mind paying for good work and expediency, but at the same time, I haven't gotten my grown-up job just yet. So if you could let me know of some good places and some price ideas, I would be so so grateful. I tried google; but the reviews haven't been very helpful and there aren't any websites for these places.

edit: also, I work on Newbury Street, so if anyone has reviews on Dependable Cleaners that would help a bunch too.

Just got some pants and a dress done at Eleni of New York. I'd say she's a touch eccentric, and I cannot compare her prices to anyone else's, but the job was done well.

Actually, I used to use Dependable Cleaners. I thought they were really awesome, actually, and I had pants done there too.

I'd be a little worried about it needing to be done in less than a week though.

Jack's Dry Cleaning, on Mass Ave, near Porter. He's amazing.

Rizzo's on Church Street in Harvard Square did an amazing job when I brought them a formal dress to take in and alter in other ways. I don't know if they can work on that kind of schedule, but I will vouch for their skill.

Big second. Rizzo's is great. And as for the time constraint, it is my belief that anything can be done as quickly as you need it if you are willing to pay extra.

Be aware that making arms skinnier on an existing shirt is not that easy. It all depends on the armscye size. If you are happy with the size at the top of the arm then it is possible. If you take the arm off and make it smaller then it will not fit back into the hole left in the main shirt (armscye)

If all you want is to take out some of the bulk around the elbow then they can just turn it inside out and run a line of stitches from the cuff to the armscye, going inwards towards the elbow and back out. If there isn't too much reduction then it is done. If there is, then the new double pointed dart needs to be slashed and the edges finished. If they have a serger then they can do it all in one step pretty quickly.

I've been happy with alterations done at Elegant Tailor (I think that is the name) -- it's on Mass Ave between Porter & Harvard, across from the Starbucks. I've had suit pants hemmed for $15, and I also had a formal dress altered. They do fantastic work. Can't say about how fast they could get it done, but as someone else has already pointed out, I'm sure if you are willing to pay extra someone can do it.

As for the shirt, it might be worth hitting up Filene's Basement if the alteration is too complicated/expensive or wouldn't be ready in time. The one on Newbury Street seems pretty well organized, and they had a lot of business clothes (at least in the women's dept).
