hey all,

my name is tim and i'm a freshman at tufts. i'm in a photo class (my first ever) and our semester projects have to be landscape photography. our professor is very set on the idea of us choosing a location and returning to it over and over and over again and using that one place as the subject of our project. on one level, i have no problem with this--but i can't for the life of me decide on or think of a place!


does anyone have any suggestions?

during my stint of about 6 different photo classes over at northeastern university i suspect i spent at least 60% of my shooting in the fens. this isnt the most original of locations but there is a lot of texture and changing, melting, bird-filled stuff there.

also more locally i like the traffic in porter, especially if you are shooting with fine grain film and a tripod.

If you're interested in a changing urban environment, how about the plants in the center circle of the Powderhouse Square Roundabout?

It's maintained by the Somerville Garden Club (http://www.somervillegardenclub.org/) so there will be lots of plants there, and it'll change dramatically through the spring.

Somewhere along the Central Artery (Greenway) corridor downtown? That's going to change a lot over the next year, both because of construction and because of seasons.

Someplace along the Mystic River? Some of it is conveniently close to Tufts, or if you have a bike or car you could scout out a variety of river/lake scenes.

Whereever it is, it should be a location that you can get to easily in all kinds of weather. A LOT of pictures is going to be the key to doing this kind of project well.

One spot that just lept to mind was the Frog Pond in Boston Common. That's going to be interesting...from being full of kids in summer to being a skating rink in winter. I used to walk past it daily going to work and it was an endless fascination.

Another is the pond in the Public Garden, with the swan boats, which is also interesting with the passing of seasons.

The Mount Auburn Cemetery has a lot of really beautiful landscape to work with.

Another thought, if you'd like to do skyline pictures, try going onto the roof of the Tufts library. If you've never been there, you'll find the best view of Somerville and Boston ever! And it's certainly accessible and easy to get to!

There's a big abandoned factory that's about a 15/20 minute walk from Davis, if you're interested in studying the change in urban decay. I took pictures there this winter and compared them to pictures that someone had taken in the spring, and the area (items on the ground and graffiti on the building, more specifically) was completely different. I don't know, I think it's pretty cool.

Prospect Hill, above Union Square, is an excellent place for skyline views. It's also one of the few green places in Somerville. People go there on July 4th to watch the fireworks.

I don't know why, but I'm very fascinated by the most sad and pathetically depressing beach ever -- Revere beach. I drive down the highway there every now and then just to marvel at how unattractive it is in that sleazy-semi-urban Massachusetts way.

Revere Beach has recently received money from federal grants, I think, to upgrade the beach and surrounding areas. Some work has already been done. Let's just hope they don't turn it into a strip of nothing but over-priced condos. Its' value as an urban beach (oldest public beach in the nation, I believe) is phenomenal. Not to mention Kelly's.......
