The Ras na hEireann will be run in West Somerville this Sunday, March 18. The race starts at 11 am in front of the Burren, then goes west to Teele Square, continues west to Clarendon Hill, north to Powder House Blvd, east through Powder House Circle and Ball Square, south on Cedar Street, and finally west on the bike path to finish at the Brooks Pharmacy parking lot.

This should be fun to watch. But if you were planning to drive or bike anywhere in this area Sunday morning, you probably should make different plans. Here's a map of the racecourse.

This also may interfere with your Sunday brunch plans at any of the places listed on those maps.

From the race guide:

"Only Registered Runners/Walkers and an immediate family member will be allowed into the post-race pubs from 12:00-1:00P.M.-extra kiddies are an exception!! The complimentary 12:00-1:00 P.M. is for those who registered NOT for the entire neighborhood you come from..we have had to crack down on this as folks were scheduling birthday parties and like kind affairs around the post race time and more non-registered folks were taking advantage of the niceties of the sponsoring pubs!!"

See you at the finish line...

Sorry - it's part of the Paddy Guide to a Great Race (http://www.baevents.com/rasnaheireann/paddyguide.html).

I should try to explain a little better than the site does: the sponsoring pubs treat runners to a complimentary pint and, in some cases, a bowl of beef stew. They do this from noon to 1pm.

I ran two years ago and had my pint at Orleans. I remember seeing some non-runners there just eating brunch, but the place got really crowded really quickly. I didn't stay for very long for that reason.

Not sure how they're going to enforce this - will they really not let any of their Sunday customers in for an hour? Seems like a dumb idea.

From later in the above link:
"Every year..I get a nasty e-mail or two from folks who get upset that they could not get into The Burren...this is not my problem!! If you need to get into The Burren to get a comp beer then start training to run 18 minutes or fastah for next weeks race...A Tip - go to another pub outside Davis Square and then head back to The Burren after 1PM when it is a little easier to get in!!"
