I checked the archives for this, but didn't see anything. Is there a place to get a good cup of Turkish coffee in the Davis area? I know of Algiers in H^2 and The Middle East in Central, but I'd like to find a place I can walk to.

Thanks!

I haven't found such a place yet (alas), but at Algiers, you can buy the little brass coffee pots to make it yourself. My boyfriend did so, and he makes awesome Turkish coffee.

yea i second the greek corner suggestion. also, it's quite easy to make yourself if you want to give that a shot.

baraka cafe (not cafe barada, different place) has it: http://www.barakacafe.com/menu.html , though their cherbat is to DIE for.

Turkish Coffee.... When it is good it is Aamzing / Strong. Not for the faint hearted. I used to have a neighbor that would make me Turkish Coffee and then read my coffee grounds. Kind of like palm reading.

Cafe Barada has very good Arabic coffee made in the Lebanese style. VERY GOOD with baklava...

Best hummos as well in my opinion (I am biased because my aunt is Lebanese and I grew up with that style of hummos.) I have eaten there since 1983 when they started in Arlington.

in Teele Square

There's a place called I-Cafe; it's actually underground so it doesn't have a shopfront. Its door is between the dentist's office and the Italian place on Broadway. They have crepes and all kinds of things--and their coffee's brilliant, although I'm not sure if the people who run it are Turkish or Lebanese.

Are these places good for sitting and just having coffee, or are you supposed to buy food? I recently moved practically nextdoor to Greek Corner and Barada but I've been avoiding most restaurants because I'm trying to live on a tight budget. I love Greek coffee though.

Sorry--should've said specifically that they have Turkish coffee; I just assumed that that would be, well, assumed. Mea culpa!

No, the name is definitely incongruous; it's by far the most unique local cafe I've found, with a very cool interior vibe: subdued lighting that's still enough to work by, a mix of Arabic and English TV projected onto a big screen (last time I was there, anyway), a nice variety of comfy and worky-type seating, run by remarkably friendly people. I recommend it and reallyreally hope it does well--but the name sure doesn't do it any favors!
