to the assholes who stole the lanterns off our porch on pearson road:  i bet you think it was REAL funny, stealing them while we were still home.  it just makes me sad about the kind of people we live around, that we can't put things out there for our enjoyment without worrying that someone will steal them.  shame on you. 

has this happened to other people in the davis square area?

I had my bike stolen off our porch last year. Also, a couch was stolen in the fall. Porch stealing does seem like the lowest of the low of the world of petty theft.

They STOLE a COUCH? I mean, I am sorry about your couch. But I have to say not everyone puts that much effort into their thievery. I don't even want to move couches when I actually own them!

we live near city hall/school street. the other day someone stole little $5 nightlight things we had in our back yard. makes us not want to put anything out there that we may actually enjoy.

It was, admittedly, a trashpicked couch. But it was *really* nice. WE were storing it on the porch preparing to take it inside. It was really big. We needed to take the legs off. I *so* wish I had walked up while they were stealing it. "Um, hi guys. How's it goin'? Heavy couch, huh?"

My friends on Winslow had someone cut flowers out of a flowerpot. They would have had to walk into the yard to get to it.

I recommend smearing vaseline on the outside of things you leave in your yard (in a pattern you'll remember so you won't get goop on your hands everytime you need to move them.)

Someone stole my first pot of pansies, but since then no one has stolen the slimy ones.

Sounds to me like a neighborhood watch group would be in order. I live just outside of the Davis area (across Mass Ave), which makes me a poor choice to do anything about this issue, but I've heard that such groups can go a long way towards easing petty crimes in an area.

A few years ago my doormat was stolen - cheap plastic doormat. Being near the high school I figure they rolled it up and smoked it.


Hasn't happened to my new neighbors though, so maybe the doormat smoker graduated.

We had some trash-picked folding chairs -- nothing too fancy, but nicer than most folding chairs, they were the kind of bowl-shaped kind. Left them on our porch for a few days last summer on Ossipee -- we'd be out there quite a lot on nice days, reading and sipping cold drinks. Then someone stole them. Actually the prevailing theory was that it was one of our neighbors, since they disappeared right after some new people moved in... but it could have been just random people.

Also, my roommate tended to leave her car doors unlocked, and several times she noticed someone had been in there rooting through her stuff. I think they stole cigarettes once. Ugh.

It is an odd thing to steal, to be sure.

I think some folks just don't think they have anything better to do with themselves. I feel sorry for them. Imagine how lame your life must be to think that stealing lanterns is the highlight of your day...

Or you could grow lots of stinging nettle in your flower pots.

Not that I condone that sort of thing.

Though stinging nettle (dried) makes a great, vitiman and mineral rich tea.

Maybe you could just label all your perfectly non-dangrous plants with dangerous sounding names like stinging nettle, poison ivy, devil's daisies, pestillence pansies, etc, to make them less attractive!

You'll learn more than you care to know about the up-coming election, including the lies being spread by Mr. Martinez (one of the candidates) concerning his 'endorsement' by the somerville police, and his 'leadership' at the city Youth Department. Definitely worth a look if you care about fighting crime in the city!
