Word on the street is that RJ Cody is to become the new home of Pluto! I haven't heard this straight from the horse's mouth but I have heard it from the businesses on either side of that space.

For those who don't know, Pluto is a quirky gift shop that used to be where Out of the Blue is (right?) or where Spikes is. I forget exactly. They also have a location in JP.

We at Magpie are excited to have some more activity in this part of the 'hood! Of course we're a smidge nervous about the competition but we think that, overall all, more fun shopping options in Davis is a good thing. :)

FYI - One of the original owners of Pluto is seriously ill. It remains to be seen if the JP store will remain open much longer. A friend/former employee had plans to open a Pluto-like store where Cody's Jewelers was, however, I have heard that the deal fell through. I believe it was the high rents, but I'm not completely sure about that. So unless they've found a way to resurrect it, I don't think (unfortunately) it will happen. I always liked Pluto, and I think they should have done better. I think poor business sense may have done them in. Too bad.

Are you saying Pluto is not opening in the RJ Cody space? Strange. I saw people coming in and out and the neighboring businesses seem to think they are moving in.

I've been in a couple of times and purchased on both occasions. Nothing big since I'm perpetually broke, but I like to support my locals as much as I can, especially when they have so much to browse through and enjoy. : )

I don't think the competition will hurt you. Having several funky stores in the same area will encourage people outside Davis to come shop here. I think your businesses will be good for each other.

since i'm new to the neighborhood, what is pluto all about?
