City mangr introduces plc commish. Kelly & Sullivan present.

Trying to be more responsive, hence this mtg. Please be patient, in midst of investigation.

Commish is a new guy on job. Still learning city. Introduced bunch of polc.

Gallucio showed up.

Sgrnt Denis O'Connor (?)

Detct. John Fogerson. Night unit. Supervisor of this inves. 6 dects working on. Have leads. Cant be too

6pm ish wed. Joseph Bain shot. several rounds on hit. spent casings, blood evidence, sent to lab. Witnesses came forward.

Q: related to prev incident where he hit assail. w/ bat?

A: no, not believed to be connected?

Q: connected to other small store robberies?

A: no, have other culp. apprehended.

Q: his past assaults?

A: not yet.

Q: doesn't he have camera?

A: Yep. Can't talk about it.

Q: He gets robbed several times a year; these are getting more violent; what can we do to protect him?

A: can't talk much about other cases

Q: so what about safety?

A: increased police pres. at closing.

Q: can more be done?

A: not really.

Q: suggestion: use video to make image, run against DMV, like in Tufts rape case?

A: different

Q: Shots fired on Rindge. Connection?

A: waiting on lab work. Just got results on a 2004 case.

Q: Crime rate? Going up?

A: robs down 17%. burgleries down 3%. violent crime about same as in the past. House breaks tend to be closer to somv. Got some carbreakers last week on cogswell st.

Q: What kind of gang activity is there in Camb?

A: Basically none?

Q: Grafiti?

A: the car breakers had ~$200 in grag. equip.

Q: Thank for holding this! Can we have foot patrols?

A: Allow me to introduce your two walking officers [names]. [applause]

Q: Neighborhood watch?

A: up to you

Q: Can you guide?

A: Sure!

Q: Was there one?

A: Taskforce. Introduces George McRay(?)

This is a wake up call. We citizens need to get back on the ball.

Q: So where is the Taskforce.

A: In aud. Stand up guys. [Introduces them, brings Shirley Santos up on to stage. Santos commended as highly responsive. 617-349-4293]

[Miss some stuff due to abruptly discovering Blazer browser has char lim on textareas, but only when you try to post. Trucates rest of notes with prejudice. Rest of this from memory and vaguer notes.]

Q: All this neighborhood watch stuff about flashlights and foot patrols is lovely, but this was in broad daylight! Concerned. How does any of this address the sort of crime this is?

A: [...]

Q: I live a few houses down and my place was burglerized several weeks ago. [Describes really crummy response from police.] And the place across the street that's being remodeled was burglarized, $3000 w.o. tools and copper from the basement. Any connection? And what are you doing about this?

A: Working on it. New commish wants to improve police response.

Q: If the suspect was shot, why didn't you get him at the hospital?

A: Who said he got shot? The *victim* got shot. We have some blood samples, but we don't know who from or why.

Q: What about the schools? If this is drug related, shouldn't the school be more involved?

A: [Loooooong (IMHO pointless) digression between questioner and member of audience on school council who talked right past each other. Questioner wanted more information, council member kept speechifying about how parents need to get more involved.]

Q: Can we get this back to Joe and keeping him safe? Concerned that this wasn't on some back alley, this was a busy, high-profile block at dinner time. Very brazen crime.

A: Yeah, though the absolute rate of crime isn't an issue, the brazenness of crime seems to be on the rise.

Q: Joe's store is incredibly important to community. Want to make sure Joe is protected and that Joe continues to want to operate a store there. "Joe needed an awning, this community bought him an awning. Joe needs a panic button? This community will buy him a panic button." What can we do to help protect him?

A: [Delicately tip-toes around explaining how they can't provide private security, being a public police department and all.] But we can make recommendations. We're glad to do that. We have resources for citizens. Talk to us.

Somewhere along here more discussion about better communication and information flow between police and citizens. Your humble reporter volunteers to help with that, where technology is concerned.

Lots other stuff discussed, but can't rightly recall it. Meeting ran to 7:30, an hour and a half.

P.S. Joe was doing well enough to attend the meeting.
