does anyone know a decent place to get a haircut? I am more of a barbershop type than a salon...but thought i would hear what you have to say.

I'm not especially picky, so I just go to Supercuts at Mass. and Rindge Aves.

Razor's is an independent, locally-owned and -operated barbershop. If you can handle watching whatever's on MTV for 20 minutes, you get a great haircut for $15. They're a walk from Davis - Highland Ave and Cherry St.

Check them out and support local business!

the little barber shop inside the triangular intersection at Holland & Winter, across from Au Bon Pain. Ann Marie's or Marie Ann's, I think it's called. $10. run by two sisters. totally great.

I'm a barbershop kind of fellow too, and I frequent the barber shop right on Highland in Davis by the Middlesex bank. They usually have the old pictures or the aftershave bottles shaped like cars in the window. Plus there's a striped pole outside and everything. Cuts are $14.00 for big folks and you can talk about the Sox all you like.

Mario's is quite nice and sometimes Mario himself will give you a haircut. It's just a little ways up Holland.

I third it. Anne Marie's is great.

Similar shops, slightly further away: La Flamme in Harvard, "John's Barber Shop" on Prospect in Central, and the Kendall barber Shop on Main St. in Kendall Sq.... (all of them very close to the T). These last three do the whole "hot foam and straight razor on the back of the neck" deal, which depending on your view is scary or awesome or both.

Salon style, but near-barbershop prices. I love them.

My all-time favorite is the Kendall Sq. barbershop ($17 as I recall it), but they have this problematic insistence of only being open from 9-5, and only on weekdays. They do the straight razor detailing and when you're done they vacuum the hairs from your head, which to my mind is the COOLEST thing ever as haircuts go.

My current favorite is Charlie's Barbershop ($14) just outside of Porter Sq. (head down Mass. Ave toward Harvard Sq. and they're on the left. They're as good as Kendall, and use the straight razor, sadly no vacuum. On the upside they're open evenings and weekends.

LaFlamme? I know guys who swear by them, but the cut I got was pretty sub-average.

Fourth. Not only is Anne Marie's great, but Anne Marie herself is fantastic. Not only will you get a great haircut for $10 (tip generously, please), but you'll learn more about Somerville in your 30 minutes there than you would in months elsewhere. It's a riot and, as a bonus, she gives great haircuts. Go.

p.s. welcome to the neighborhood

Agreed. Anne Marie and her sister are both really wonderful.

I once decided to grow my hair out a bit and they told me after one trim that if I decided the next week I wanted it back to its normal shorter length I should come back in and they would shorted it right up, no charge.

Someone above mentioned the barbershop near Renee's. That's Alibrandi's. I think it's great for a buzzcut - $10. (I get mine cut short so I'm not sure how they'd do w/ a longer haircut.) But Mario's (as others have mentioned) is excellent too and only $20.
