As I was bringing my recycling out just now, a neighbor said that City Hall has a holiday tomorrow, so I checked the Somerville website and indeed there's an Alert linked from the main page:
Monday, June 18th is Bunker Hill Day

Holiday Parking and Trash Pickup Regulations In Effect

Bunker Hill Day is an official municipal holiday in Somerville, as well as in Boston, Chelsea and certain other communities.

In Somerville, City offices will be closed for transactions. Residents and businesses should remember that parking meters will not be in force and that holiday parking regulations will be in effect.

As in the case of all weeks that begin with a Monday holiday, trash pickup will be delayed by one day for all city residents throughout the week.

I got a robo-call from Tom Champion around 6 pm today with this information.

The robo-call system is smart enough to leave voice-mail messages when you don't answer.

I get Mr. Champion on my cell. You can register any number.

Luckily our downstairs neighbors didn't get the message, because our trash just got picked up anyway.

Did Tom Champion forget to call the trash collectors?

My trash got picked up, too. Fortunately I didn't get the message either!

Wow, thanks for lying to me, Tom Champion! I managed to run my recycling out just before the truck got there, but I did a fridge toss yesterday and I'm stuck with a stinky leftovers garbage bag until next Monday.

And of course 311 is probably closed today - but you might try calling to complain anyway.

You know what this means, don't you? All of those streets that got picked up in error today, will be skipped tomorrow. So the people who followed the schedule and didn't put out their trash today, will put it out tomorrow, and mark my words, you will all be calling DPW, 311, wherever you want to try to get it picked up!

Check out the city's website. This is what it says now:

June 17, 2007

Monday, June 18th is Bunker Hill Day - TRASH CONTRACTOR'S SCHEDULING ERROR CORRECTED

Bunker Hill Day is an official municipal holiday in Somerville, as well as in Boston, Chelsea and certain other communities.

Please note that the city's trash contractor erroneously began trash and recycling pickups this morning for those residents with Monday pickups. The contractor has stopped these pickups, and will return tomorrow to conduct regular holiday schedule pickups. If your street is normally scheduled for Monday trash collection, your trash will be picked up on Tuesday, June 19th.
-----

So if you got picked up today, you'll get picked up again tomorrow -- and the rest of the week is still on a holiday schedule, i.e., one day later than usual.

The real question is: why is it either necessary or desirable to delay trash pickup one day because of this alleged holiday?

I heard the trucks this morning and ran out in my robe dragging my trash. I talked to the trash guy and asked him what was going on. He said that they just want Somerville to be clean.

He assured me that they would come back on Tuesday and collect the trash again so I can put out additional trash, recycling and yard waste on Tuesday.

Now I don't feel bad about forgetting to take the garbage to the curb anyway. :-/
