just a wee warning to those passing through the powderhouse square area - there are a few mockingbirds (i think) that have built nests in this area, and they are quite insane in their quest to protect them.  i have been attacked twice this week when passing through the walkway area in the center of the rotary (nearest the funeral home) by a crazed bird, and i also witnessed a bird attack a dog over by the bus shelter by broadway.  it doesn't really hurt, just some pecking, but it sure scared the crap out of me, and anyone with children in particular might want to avoid these areas.

Haha, a friend of mine posted about her bird attack this weekend. They're courageous little things.

Someone needs to tell Jack Connolly - sounds like a perfect opportunity to break out the anti-gang ordinance (http://www.provost-citywide.org/journal-gangs.html). Let's put a stop to those out of control mockingbird gangs!

There's a nest near Cherry and Summer so that is another place to keep your eyes open. They are my favorite birds but they own the city of Somerville and they want you to know it! If you are really concerned, you can buy a white hat and paint eyes on the top of it - they will stay away for sure. :)

Mockingbirds own WHEREVER they nest! :D I grew up in Texas and I remember my grandparents' cats getting divebombed by mockingbirds if they so much as walked near a tree.

Fortunately, there's no diner or gas station next to that rotary.

I've heard reports of mockingbirds in Cambridge imitating car alarms ...

I know in my just-over-the-line Medford neighborhood they do.

And I swear I heard one imitating the neighborhood dog the other day. Very odd sounding.

And jackhammers. After a summer of the sidewalks at the nearby intersection being torn up and repaved (and then re-torn-up and re-re-paved) I was once awoken at first light by the dulcet tones of what I could have sworn was a jackhammer. Indeed I swore quite a bit, and threw open the window and looked around for the jackass with the hydrolic power tools. There wasn't anybody. Slowly it dawned on my sleep addled brain that nobody was actually tearing up pavement at 4:30am, and all that sound was originating from overhead. I looked up to see a little grey bird, whose throat was throbbing with the sound.

I think mockingbirds everywhere imitate car alarms. They seem especially fond of the car alarm that cycles through 4 different, equally annoying, alarms. *twitch*

In my neighborhood near Davis they do.

One summer they imitated a colicky baby.

There are some in my neighbor's yard and they dive bomb his dog.
The poor thing is now paranoid to just sit around the yard.
Perhaps they're getting revenge for how the dog barks at the UPS driver?
At least they haven't bothered me too much yet while I've been in my hammock.

Phew, it's not just me! I was really freaked out when one of the birds attacked me the other day. I didn't know they had a nest there, but that makes sense.
