Hey y'all, my boyfriend's 19-year-old sister is living with him this summer taking classes at Tufts, and we're trying to figure out ways to help her meet people--she's supersocial and feeling the lack of a social network.  We're both veryvery busy at work this summer so we're not terribly available, but she'd be up for pretty much anything as far as I can tell.  She's sort of a girly-girl most recently from East Compton in L.A.; I'd guess she's not much on outdoorsy type stuff, but shopping or eating out or live music or dancing or movies or general Boston sight-seeing would be good. She loves animals and kids, and she wants to learn to play chess. I don't know her very well, but that's what I got.  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Man, all these memories of animals and children messing up my chess games just came flooding back to me.

If memory serves, there are some guys who sit at the stone chess tables at Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square and advertise learning chess from the "Chess Master" at $2/hour. That might be good for socializing, Boston sightseeing, and learning to play chess all at once. :-) I have no idea what their schedule is but it might be worth dropping by Harvard Square just to find out.

Passim has live music every night, and it's all ages.

The New England Aquarium is (a) cool and (b) filled with kids and (c) often taking volunteers. (Also, if you just want to visit, the Somerville library can hook you up with passes for $5 admission rather than the usual $19.)

Wouldn't Tufts also have suggestions and/or social activities for the students? I don't know how much action there is over the summer but it seems like a natural connection.

At least one guy there has a sign claiming to be the "Chess Mister".

Theatre@First is looking for stagehands (http://community.livejournal.com/theatreatfirst/60332.html#cutid1) for the summer show. If she's willing to help, that's a pretty quick way to meet about forty people of a wide variety of ages and interests, many of whom hang out together around Davis Square apart from rehearsals and such.

I'll second this. Theatre@First is an extremely social group and the sister would find herself with a ton of fun people to hang out with, parties to go to, and a network into many other groups of every kind.

That goes for anyone else who wants to join us, too!

That must be what I was thinking of! Thanks for the correction.

I'm sure that I saw the $2/hour signs and invitations to take lessons, at any rate.

I just would hate for the poor guy to have his little joke missed. :)

http://www.meetin.org/city/MEETinBOSTON/ has a whole mess of fun stuff going on (including mani and martini nights). Most of the people are 22-38, but if she's outgoing enough she could check it out anyway...

go instead of chess?

The Boylston Chess Club is right in Davis, and has games all the time. Check out:

http://www.boylstonchessclub.org/index.html

Also, she should check out the players in Harvard Sq; most will play for free and are very nice people. The gentleman with the Chess Master sign is an actual chess master, and will typically throw a bit of a lesson in with the fee for the game. Otherwise, National Master Vadim Martirosov and Internal Master Satea Husari both are well known chess instructors in Boston. If you'd like there contact information just reply to this.
