Lights on trees

davis_squareI noticed that for all or most of the trees in the Square with strings of lights on them, only one string (of two) is actually lit. Does anyone know why?
I have no opinions at all on whether this is a good or bad thing -- I'm just curious. I apologize in advance if there is an obvious answer in a place I should have been able to find.
