Desperately Seeking Yummy Cakes

davis_squareIt's come to my attention that it's virtually impossible to find a good cake out there that's not plain or chocolate. Seems like people believe it's all about the filling and not about the cake itself. This is something perpetuated by typical Italian bakeries which are all about the puddings (tiramisu) or fillings (mascarpone).
What I'm really looking for is a German or Eastern European bakery, one that thinks in terms of hazelnut, almond, and nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Is this simply a lost cause? Does anyone know of any bakeries that sell a cake where the cake itself is more than just a medium for goo?
