Borrow my cane for five minutes, and you'll get more context than you ever wanted. ;)

This would be a good topic to bring up with your ward alderman (Rebekah Gewirtz if you live in ward 6).

You would be perfectly justified in jabbing your cane through the side window and poking out the driver's eye.

That, in your experience, more traffic enforcement is needed -- specifically, of the requirement that drivers yield to pedestrians (blind or otherwise0.

Perhaps she can work on increasing the penalties, for, ya know, hitting a pedestrian with your car. I mean, she can only do something in Somerville, but it's better than nothing at all, right?

I doubt enough drivers hit blind people to warrant a public service announcement. Still, if you were struck, sorry to hear it.

"If you see someone with a white cane, STOP and let them cross" is always a useful thing to reiterate.

I couldn't agree more. Didn't she say, though, that someone was already stopped and intentionally accelerated into her as she made her way across the street? That sounds like a lunatic, not a traffic problem.

I'm pretty sure it's only 25 points.

Hit and run is pretty up there with moving violations.

I certainly hope you called the police and filed a report. We appreciate the PSA, but law enforcement needs to know about this if you think it's a pervasive problem and want tougher enforcement of traffic regulations.

that's something to definitely call the cops about.

also, mastering the spinning back cane hit to sideswipe their car with. it's a shame you'd ruin the carbide tip of your cane, but that's the breaks ;) "but officer, he hit me and i spun around and ..."

drivers (and bikers and cyclists) shouldn't be hitting ANYONE in a crosswalk. period.

They can't do anything like increase patrols in the area if they don't know about the problem. So tell them about the problem.
