Found- white male ferret with black eyes on School St in Somerville. Appears domesticated, about 3 years old, is friendly and doesn't mind being held. Has a tattoo showing he's from Marshall Farms. Here are a couple of pics. The little fellow's eyes are black- the red is because of the flash.

My friend, who has ferrets, has him right now and is taking care of him. From the looks, he's been outside at least a week.

A lot of people tattoo pets to identify them :)

You might call a local vet or animal control and ask if they know of an exotic pets registry that the tattoo might be registered at.

At least - assuming its a number/registery type tattoo... heh.

Calling the breeder might get you the name of the owner.

Well... how many white ferrets did they sell three years ago to people in somerville?

It's worth a call, anyway, isn't it?

It still might not hurt though. I mean I'm ignorant of ferret breeding but it's always possible this isn't a big breeder and might only have a few litters, few purely albino, or whatever. Who knows? Although perhaps your friend does and this is pointless advice. If so - sorry!

I guess that won't help if they sold it to a pet store though.

Also, please keep us updated. I've got a friend who might be considering getting a ferret, who might be willing to adopt rather than see it go to MSPCA.

http://www.marshallpet.com/marshall/mp_privacy.html This would probably be the tattoo.. Not worth calling.

Marshall's ferrets have tattoos in the ears to indicate that they've been neutered and descented.

I'm confused, what does the website privacy policy have to do with the tattoo?

Marshall's is the major breeder of ferrets for pet stores in the US. Most of the pet store ferrets sold in the US three years ago were from Marshall's, as they are every year. So not really any help. :)

I'd hang up a few signs with the picture of the little guy... but unless the person has a picture of him on their own, I wouldn't hand him to anyone.

I pasted wrong. But in the left menu it tells about the ferrets. They send their ferrets to pet stores after 7 weeks.

It is really great that you are doing this and I am also curious to hear an update, but can you please lj-cut the pictures? Or just leave the smaller one outside the the cut and cut the larger?

Thanks!

It's just the "multiple" part -- keeping one outside the cut is fine.

(What a cutie!)

(Hi, I'm Ian, the foster home)

If his owners don't come forward, I'll probably end up keeping him. I've kept ferrets all my life, so he'll have a good home with friends. However, I can recommend the MA Ferret Friends (http://www.maferrets.org/) as a good place for your friend to adopt from. They are in particular need at the moment as a large Ohio breeder just shut down and over 800 ferrets need to find homes.

Marshall Farms (where the ferret in question came from) breeds and sells many thousands of ferrets per year and they all have the same tattoo. Plus the major pet store chains they sell through don't record owner addresses, so it's a dead end there.

There's a lost Ferret on the City's Animal Contrl website. It looks like a different color, but could just be the photo? http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=animal&page=287
