Bicycle stolen from Davis Sq. T station

Posting on behalf of my housemate:

My bike was stolen from the Davis Sq. T stop on the night of the 8th of October. The bike is a neon orange woman's style KONA mountain bike from around 1999/2000 (i think). It is in good condition, doesn't have a kickstand, a soft black seat, and has a rack grocery bag holder on the back. The bike was stolen with one of the bags from of the eleven 81 brand. The bag also had my helmet in it. If anyone finds the bike let me know!!!

Any clues or tips on how to increase her chances of recovering the bike would be much appreciated. It's her only mode of transportation, unfortunately. (And since the mugging on our street a couple weeks ago, we've felt a lot safer biking home than walking home alone.)

Well, except feet. Kidding. Seriously, that sucks! I will definitely keep an eye out and feel no compunction about poking a stick through a spoke should I see someone riding it.

Did she register it with the Tufts PD? If not, she should register her next bike with them. They have good decals -- not ugly and don't come off easily (unlike the Arlington PD decal, which was hideous and fell off within days...).

She walks/runs so much and so far that when she uses her bike, it's for what other people use a car for! But I guess she'll be walking a lot more now...

What sort of lock did she use? Was the lock broken and left at the site?

call around to bike shops, especially places like broadway bike that sell used bikes...and monitor craigslist. Bikes are usually stolen for resale.

Yes, please find out how it was secured. As someone who rides all over the area, I'd like to know what tools thieves in Davis are employing.

As for suggestions - report the bike stolen with the police. If she has the serial number this will help (usually stamped on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell (the place where the cranks go). Keep an eye on Craigslist to see if it pops up there. If it does, try to set up a buy and contact the police.

You can look for it here, although most of the listed bikes seem to be recovered in Boston. You can also register and report the stolen property, so if it turns up, they can contact you.

Interestingly, Broadway bikes doesn't buy used bikes, mostly because they might be stolen. The used bikes that they sell they pick up at places like Goodwill or yardsales and refurbish, I was told.
