If I remember correctly....McDonald's was in Davis Square in the 80's. They left for several years. In the meantime, Burger King attempted to go into the space and were not allowed. It never made sense that they then allowed McDonald's to go back in! I don't know who makes these decisions, but they seem very arbitrary to me.
