honest mechanic?

can anyone recommend an honest mechanic near davis or porter square? it's time to make my car start again. i know it needs the bad fuel drained out, a gasket replaced on the valve covers, probably spark plugs checked, and a general checkup. it also needs new brake rotors & pads all around. i need someone who will do the needed work only at reasonable cost -- honesty is the most important thing here.

(for the record, i cannot recommend you ever take a car to Fresh Pond Mobil for repairs. i did years ago, because it was closest to where my previous car broke down. they seemed to be one of the shops who did work quickly, and the car developed new problems within a week. once was coincidence, but when it developed a third problem in a row after being there twice, i got suspicious. a car shouldn't need to have a waterpump replaced, when my dad had replaced it the month before...)

I've been happy with Ideal Engine, on Day St. about half a block from Davis Sq. Only complaint is that, when they say they'll call at 4:00 or when the car is done, they don't. At least they're consistent about it, though.

ABJ Foreign Auto (though they will also service domestic cars) has been quite good to me; they're a bit out of your target area, being over sort of back behind Somerville High in the City Hall area, but they do good work, don't recommend anything unnecessary, and are reasonable in terms of price. (The only caveat is that Al - who runs the place - isn't the most prompt about getting in touch with you, so you sort of need to call and check in.)

I had great luck and fantastic service (they were willing to do it at 6:30 am so I could get it done before work) at Jack's Gas on Mass Ave. It helps to call ahead and make an appointment.

Not quite Davis/Porter-y, and they're brand specific, but I love Hondar House on Prospect St. in Camb. for my last 7 years of Hondas.

Don't ever go to Cottman Transmissions out past Union on Washington street. I had a horrible experience with them doing some clutch maintenance- they refilled my Acura with the wrong weight transmission fluid, which burned out my 5th gear, and when I took the car back to them to investigate they ran the entire transmission through a parts washer to cover up, and claimed they couldn't find anything wrong. The acura dealer told me what happened after the fact, but said he wouldn't testify against them.
