I expected (and even hoped) to be woken up last night by celebratory noise if the Sox won, and I was, but it really wasn't too much. This was up between Ball and Powderhouse. Were things down in Davis anything like 2004's incredibly fun street party?

I was in Davis Square after the game, and there was some commotion, but not a whole lot. A few folks yelling, some cars honking horns, but certainly nothing like 2004.

Spatch must have stayed later, because he saw a bit more.

I had no idea it was the world series until I heard all the ballyhoo, and it was certainly enough to let me know something was up - I'm near Porter Square. My boyfriend and I looked at each other and said, "Probably Sports?" and then put the tv on cnn for five seconds in order to ensure something noteworthy to civilization hadn't occurred, lol.

I didn't think it was possible to block the Red Sox out of your life quite that completely -- wouldn't it require avoiding all newspapers, TV, and radio for the whole month of October?

Believe it or not, it's possible to follow current events and skip over the sports completely, just like a lot of people skip over the stupid "entertainment" gossip sections of the paper and news. I'm nearly thirty years old and I've never seen an professional sports game (on TV or otherwise), other than bits of the Olympics... or what might have been on in the background when I was at a pub.

I don't know what time it was, but I heard some guys hollering up the street late last night, and I think I heard "Let's go, Red Sox" chants wafting up the street from Orleans. I also heard what sounded like pounding on cars and knocking over trash barrels, which was more worrisome to me, but soon after saw two police cars near my house. All seemed quiet after that.

It's not just the media consumption -- there are social circles and jobs where it would be absolutely impossible to be unaware of these things. (I became a Sox fan in '03, teaching at a boys' school. Just try to be unaware of sports when you spend hours a day around 14-year-old boys.)

I guess there are social circles and jobs where you wouldn't have any water-cooler talk of that sort, but it's hard for me to imagine them. Lotta lives, you'd have to avoid not only media but *people* to pull that off.

But when the sports news is front and center with a full color photograph and the lead story on every bit of local news? My wife doesn't much care for sports, but even she thinks the galvanizing effect the Red Sox in the post season can have on the city is pretty cool.

That said, I could do without the fires and the looting. Seems like that was kept to a minimum this year.

Of course, some people are amazed at what I've been able to ignore or block out.

I don't think I could name more than three current prime-time non-cable network TV series (American Idol, The Simpsons, Survivor?, ....), any current Patriots player other than Tom Brady, or any current Celtics or Bruins player.

I'm a fairly social person, I'm not even shy or introverted, but my friends and co-workers know that I'm not into sports so they don't engage me in conversation about it. I guess I've never been the sort of person who became interested in popular things just so that I could maintain smalltalk. I'd rather introduce something new to discuss and gauge reactions so I know who I might enjoy talking to.

Politics are often "front and center" and even "in color" on the newspaper, but 41% of Americans can't name the Speaker of the House. I imagine they totally tune out such things en route to the sports scores the same way I do the reverse.

I'm almost as mainstream-media-avoidant as they come, but I gotta say, there's actually some decent stuff on TV these days. Of course I watch it all on DVDs or online, but still. Depends on your tastes, but this sci-fi/quirky/clever-shows fan has been surprisingly happy lately with an actual handful of good shows to watch.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I only knew that they were about to win the World Series (and I still don't understand what makes it so "worldly") because my husband's DJ night was canceled as it's in the Fenway area. Thank you, sports fans.

I work at home, and I can honestly say I don't have any friends that are into sports, so yeah...I tune out sports news all together, and I'm perfectly happy with that. I do some contract work with one woman who can't believe I've never been inside Fenway Park, but I tell her that I can't believe she's never been inside the new ICA. :)

I grew up never paying attention to sports (except getting pissed when football pre-empted Futurama of course), despite living with a sports maniac brother and father. But then I went to college in sports-obsessed Mass, and the Patriots won 3 superbowls and the Red Sox won in dramatic fashion.. Following the sports around here gave me something in common with my friends and peers (as well as complete strangers). Being a part of this culture has made me feel like I was in on something, part of something bigger than myself. I learned to appreciate the mental aspects (and there are many!) of the games. I learned to love the in-jokes that come from knowing about the eccentric personalities of the wierdos who play these games, and the rediculous (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoMmbUmKN0E) football (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3NDiMorX-o) coach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDAq5tyfk9E) tirades. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMk5sMHj58I) I learned to love AD&D For Jocks, AKA Fantasy Football. The idiots who call up to sports radio alone can be hilarious to listen to.

I'm not trying to pursuade anybody into loving sports by any means - I respect everyone's right to their own hobbies. But you have to take into consideration that Boston is currently at the forefront of the sporting world. The Sox are the champions again. The Patriots are possibly the best team in NFL history. And the Celtics have gone from zeros to heroes overnight with the addition of two top-15 players. We have a college football team to watch now in BC. Even the hapless Bruins are doing things. This is the high water mark. I'm glad to be along for the ride; it will never get any better than this.

But you have to take into consideration that Boston is currently at the forefront of the sporting world.

As a friend said to me recently, it's tough to live in Title Town.

The only Boston teams I really root for, though, are the Sox and the C's. For everything else, I either grew up with a team somewhere else (football, particularly college) or don't know enough about the sport yet to have a team (hockey).

But I am actually excited to go to a basketball game. Big Baby's from my hometown!!!!

My impression is that the only people who pay attention to BC sports are people who have some connection with the place. Not like Columbus where I grew up, where everyone follows Ohio State football regardless of whether they even know someone who has ever set foot on the campus.

I'm the same way about not being into sports. I never would have watched any of the 2004 games or been at the Davis post-win festivity if not for my theatre cast-mates dragging me along. When I've watched games, I never really care about the game, I just care which ones have nice butts. :-)

ohio state has played major bowl games and has finished near the top many, many times, so certainly they have a large unaffiliated fan base. BC however, is suddenly #2, a rarity, so more fans will come around.
