Is there anywhere in the Davis area that takes batteries for recycling? (the non-rechargable type) I hate to put them in trash.

I just noticed that Harvest Co-op in Central does. I didn't check the details, so you might want to call them first.

Possibly Greenward, on Mass Ave just past Porter. You might want to call and check, but I think they have boxes for recycling a couple different items - I dropped off an old cell phone this weekend.

The City of Somerville will accept them at HHW events (http://www.somervillema.gov/Section.cfm?org=Environ&page=111).

I need to go myself because I have a propane cylinder and two gas cylinders I need to surrender.

I thought the city took only rechargeables (which can no longer be recharged)

It seems like a shame...

My apologies.

I thought the post was regarding rechargeable batteries, as the non-rechargeable batteries may be disposed of in the solid waste stream.

Non-rechargeable (alkali) batteries are not hazardous waste, and they cannot be recycled (there is minimal recyclable material left in the casing, if any, and zero in the insides). According to the DEP, the proper course of action is to place them in the trash (See here (http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/8819.html), here (http://ehso.com/ehshome/batteries.php)).

It seems like a shame, but there is minimal value to them, and they are not hazardous. Rechargeable batteries are hazardous waste (they have hazardous insides, unlike alkali batteries), and thus they are collected separately for proper disposal.

if you're near tufts, there's drop offs all over campus.

I think Whole Foods has a box for battery recycling as well.
