Someone stole our recycling bin.

Again.

My roommate brought the trash cans in after the garbage pickup, so I didn't realize it until I went to put something in the bin today. This makes the third time that our recycling bin has been stolen. Our trash can has also been stolen at least three times, though this latest one hasn't been taken yet. Everything's been clearly labeled with our address. I've even gone out on the night before trash day to see if I can find someone who's put our bin or can out with their stuff in it, but to no avail.

Has anyone else in the Highland Road/Morrison area had issues with this? Or is there just someone out there who's trying to mess with me specifically? It never seems like any other cans or bins from our building go missing. I've already spent about $45 or so on trash cans, which is just ridiculous when we've never actually HAD more than one at a time, and I've had to send my boyfriend out to get me a new recycling bin on his day off because they're never open at times when I'm not at work. I won't have time to get a new one now until after Christmas when I'm on vacation.

Gah. I'm bloody fed up with this crap.

I had that problem in Winter Hill--the recycling bins got stolen a couple times, and living in the Tufts area it disappeared once (to be returned a few weeks later, as it had the address on it).
I'm told they're not usually stolen for recycling, but because it's a convenient storage bin...so you may never actually see it nearby.

Um...paint the next one with really ugly and obvious paint or dirty pictures? Maybe they won't want it.

Yeah, ours got stolen four times when we lived on Winter Hill, even though I put our address on it in huge block letters. One of the times, I saw it across the street, but it was behind a locked gate, so I couldn't steal it back.

Ever since we moved to the Davis area, it hasn't happened once.

I haven't. But my mom lives with us and she tends to swoop down and get the bin the minute it's been emptied. I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem but I'll have mom keep her eyes and ears open.

I always used to spray paint our street address in large numbers on our recycling bin. There's something about big, industrial font that says you mean business. But if kids are stealing them for uses other than recycling, then that may not be as much of a help.

I'm the roommate in question, and I have to wonder if the trash collectors/recyling pickup people aren't just grabbing stuff, bin & all, and chucking it in the back of their vehicle. I strongly suspect the trash collectors in re: the AWOL trash cans, and I wouldn't be surprised if they or the other above-mentioned suspects were responsible for the recycling bins as well.

Then again, it could just be random assholes...*sigh*

my good friend lives on st. james, right off willow, so generally in the area you're describing, and her recycling bin was stolen too, she was complaining about it last week...

I live in that area and my recycling bin was stolen once and then reappeared, weird. If you get paper bags from the grocery store you can start to use those instead for all of your recycling -- its not like the bin costs anything but it is a pain in the butt to go to DPW to get a new one.

On our street, the trash men leave the recycling bins all over the block, so the neighbors often pick up our bin by mistake, even though all the bins on the street are clearly marked. This happens with trash cans, too. We once rescued our trash can from the neighbors, who had unknowingly been using it for several weeks. I assumed this happens on every street.

They get all mixed up on our street, too. People just take whatever is in front of their house. It's kind of like musical chairs. The last person to try to retreive a bin loses out. If you don't want to lose your bin, retrieve it right away.
