First there were firetrucks, then an ambulance, now there's cops. The cops, in particular, won't say what is going on, but I think there might've been a break-in next door. We're in the block between Highland and Summer--anyone know anything?

Oh. Um, that was me breaking in. Yeah. I'll be hanging around tomorrow night if you want my autograph.

Why would they roll fire trucks and an ambulance to a break-in? I suspect it's likely a medical emergency of some sort.

you didn't say that in your original posting. :-P On the other hand, if they've got fire and ambulance there, it's something a little more serious than an ordinary burglary.

Not necessarily. If someone just called 911 but didn't say anything, mightn't fire/medical/police all be sent? I mean, it'd suck for it to be a real emergency and the wrong one shows up.

I don't think so. I think they'd send a cop, who could then radio back if more was needed. If everyone was dispatched to every non-specific 911 call, there'd be fire engines whizzing around all the time!

Or so I think ex recto based on my experiences, anyway, but I've never worked as a cop, EMT, or firefighter, so perhaps someone with greater clue could say more definitely.

Protocol varies town to town, but often police carry O2 in their trunk and are both first sent to investigate - you don't want your squishies walking into a bad situation - and because they are out and about, first to arrive even if multiple units are dispatched. All that assumes a 'blank' 911 call with little/no info given.

Fire showing up first says they thought they knew what was going on, and unlikely violent in nature.

There *are* -- haven't you noticed? :)

I know for sure the firefighters are often sent as first responders for medical emergencies, because they have the basic training and can often get there faster than an ambulance.

When was this? I walked right down that part of Summer St. around 8:15 and didn't see or hear anything.

Geez, I don't know how I could have missed something like this. I walked from Davis Square up Highland to Cherry, then back to Davis down Summer, all during the time you mentioned.

Whatever it was, I sure hope it wasn't another fire. This city has had enough of that for the whole winter already.
