Hey crew,

I'm looking to donate a bunch of monitors, desktops, network gear, and possibly mice/keyboards as well as other errata. Does anyone know off the top of their heads any worthwhile organizations that could benefit from connectivity?

Be warned, I rate suggestions based on how cute and cuddly the recipients of the hardware are.

"Errata" are mistakes. Now I don't know what you meant to say: "ephemera"? "Detritus"?

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.'

That's not what "interpolate" means, either. "Interpret"? "Extrapolate"? "Translate"?

You're a modern-day Mrs. Malaprop! It's just like a Restoration comedy in here, but without the panniers and face powder.

Did you see this post (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/1080475.html) the other day? Maybe try the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter?

For that charity or any other, if you're donating anything less than a fully functional computer with all necessary accessories (i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse), I would suggest talking to them first. It may very well be that they'd love to take bits and parts of computers -- in which case, great, I've got stuff for them too!

But it's also possible that donations of this kind might present them with more trouble than it's worth. It goes for all charities -- if it costs them more to sort/repair/deal with in-kind donations than it would cost them to buy everything new, it's not helping them -- that's why so many Hurricane Katrina charities refused to take used books, clothes, etc.

Unfortunately, computer detritus is notoriously difficult to recycle/otherwise dispose of -- most charities won't take it, computer stores will only take them under limited circumstances, you can't throw them out with the trash, and so forth. That's why I'd suggest talking to them first to find out what kind of donations would be helpful and what would not. Although I suppose you probably weren't planning to just leave a box on their doorstep, so perhaps you would've talked to them anyway. :) Anyway, let us know!

Harvard Square Homeless Shelter can use a desktop computer; see here.

If someone gives them a monitor-less PC (as suggested by one of the commenters there), they'll need a monitor too.

If they end up with a computer, but no monitor, I could hook them up with an old 19" CRT.

See if the East Somerville Community School could use any of that after their recent fire? Local kids are totally cute and cuddly. *looks through email* "If you have such donations to make, please contact Sue Leone at frankl4@msn.com."

I found an online network through the EPA website that connects potential equipment donors with non-profits who are looking for them:
http://www.recycles.org/forms/donate.htm

My old macintosh setup ended up in a non-profit in Brockton that helps get wrongly convicted prisoners back on their feet. Computers were gone within a week of me posting about them. You can specify whether you will deliver or not.
Most satisfying.

In general, this EPA is a fantastic resource for this sort of thing:
