I recommend Texas Roadhouse in Wellington Circle. From Davis Sq take College Ave to Powderhouse, continue out Harvard Ave to merge onto Route 16 East. Follow Route 16 to the Route 99 circle and then turn into the shopping mall where there's the Target, Costco, Home Depot, etc. The roadhouse is on your left. VERY yummy steaks, IMHO.

+1, Texas Roadhouse is awesome by chain resto standards. The wait is usually huge at all the ones I've ever been to, but there's some shopping nearby if you want to kill time. And the food is to die for IMHO.

high end cow or not so much?

hrm...mid range cow...
It seems to be either chains or no chains...and since Boston/Cambridge seems to lack for anything remotely smacking of a neat independent steak place...I'd say your best bets are Frank's on Mass Ave (they have really really good food and a cheesy amusing vibe). or um...hmmm
damn this town for chains with mediocre chains for steaks and overly priced places.
oh wait...snap-THE STOCKYARD in brighton

Yeah, Frank's is one of those neighborhood places that seems like it's been there forever, it's got pictures on the walls of local celebrities who've visited (and who you'd only recognize if you were a local, too) and if you go in on a Sunday, you'll lower the collective age in the place by about 20 years. Fun piano bar on the weekends, though. They had a decent French Onion soup the last time I went.

High end cow, though, you run over to Smith & Wollensky and gorge yourself and pay it off in monthly installments.

Smith and Wollensky is waaaaaay overrated....I like places like KO Prime or Moo where the chef can think for himself

no I'm lying through my teeth...yes there is: http://urlwww--mooorestaurant--com.rtrk.com/
one thing I never fuck around regarding is food

what's "rtrk.com" and how does it relate to a restaurant?

Date: 2007-12-23 05:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] carlagaglione.livejournal.com
it's the restaurant's website

hmmmm ok I had c/ped off of xv Beacon's website, and something must have misfired. I'll blame the 3/4s bottle of cab I had sucked down.

Mooo (notice the three o's) really does exist, and their website is http://www.mooorestaurant.com/ (http://www.mooorestaurant.com/). I haven't been there, I just found it when a friend was complaining about the previous occupant of that space having vanished.

Yeah, Stockyard. It used to be way better before they renovated and stopped selling porterhouse (wtf?) but it's still good, independent, and decently priced.

I concur fully...but unless you're willing to do high end (which I would never complain about) there seems to be a lack of independent steak houses in Boston, which is a true shame.

Did you know that Porterhouse steak is named after a former hotel in Porter Square?

Date: 2007-12-23 12:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rxrfrx.livejournal.com
I've seen conflicting information about the origin of the cut and/or its name... it makes sense that it's named after the place in Porter because of the area's former beef industry (the Stockyard is so-named because that area of Brighton used to be stockyards). However, Michael Lomonaco has made claims re: Porter House New York that the porterhouse cut was somehow invented in NYC. I couldn't find anything definitive about this.

Flemings, Moo..., KO Prime,
my vote would be for Flemmings, they have the BEST taters ever

sorry, I have that effect on others, and I'm a total chowhound...Flemmings is expensive but SO WORTH IT
but seriously, if you're looking to have a decent piece of mootastic, and be on a quasi-budget...I'd say Stockyard :)

Tango, in Arlington Center.

I completely agree with this endorsement. Go to Tango in Arlington. It's on Mass Ave near Arlington Sq. It's great Latin American steak. My favorite steak is the steak and eggs.
My face is drooling just thinking about it... a lot.

I third this suggestion -- I love Tango in Arlington! It's Argentinian-based food, and their steaks are awesome. I love the steak with the Roquefort cheese melted on top.

Grill 23. By far the best steak I've ever had.

Date: 2007-12-23 03:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] carlagaglione.livejournal.com
not so bad either, but still I think the OP was looking for something a little less pricey. Capitol Grille isn't so bad either, but still I stand by my choices.
Steak is one of those things that people never seem to see eye to eye on though.
For me, you could just plop me down at Flemmings for a petite filet, some Flemmings potatoes and asparagus with a decent bottle of red zin, and all's well with the world...for others, the swankness of Moo... or KO Prime (ate there once, not impressed).
Vive le difference.

Believe it or not, Kelly's Dinner in Somerville has a great (and cheap!) steak and eggs breakfast. (Although you probably want it for dinner in this post. BUT, NEVER THE LESS, they make it awesome! :D)

Being the drrty southerner that I am, I will put in my vote for Ruth's Chris. However, I've only ever eaten at the one in Baton Rouge, so I can't speak to the one specifically in Boston.

Has anyone been to the Boston one?

Date: 2007-12-23 07:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icecreamempress.livejournal.com
It's fine. They're all fine. Overpriced, but fine. The quality is very consistent from restaurant to restaurant.

Ruth's Chris, McCormick and Schmick's, and P.F. Chang's used to be my default "business trip" food when I didn't know any of the local restaurants.

Date: 2007-12-23 02:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] closetalker11.livejournal.com
Eh, that's disappointing to hear it be just "fine." The one back home is fabulous; I wonder if it has to do with having been open before the place was too chain-y. Or maybe I have bad steak taste!! :)

Thank you for the warning!

I've never been to the one in Baton Rouge, so it may have more charm than the newer ones.

I've never had a bad steak at Ruth's Chris, but I've never had a transcendent steak there, either. I've had transcendent steaks at Abe and Louie's, and at Moo, and at Fleming's.

I like Abe and Louie's for fancy but not crazy-'spensive steakage.

Frank's Steak House for the cozy down-home affordable steakage.

Moo for the crazy-'spensive steakage. EVOO has some great steaks sometimes, but it's hit or miss.

I know it sounds unlikely, but Rubin's Kosher Deli in Brookline has a really good steak (my not--nearly-as-strictly-kosher brother has confirmed that it's one of the best he's ever had).

I'm also a fan of Frank's: it's at Mass Ave just outside the Square, so if you're looking for something in the neighborhood, it can't be beat.
