Today I noticed that the dollar store on Highland Ave in between (formerly) La Contessa and Blue Shirt Cafe is totally emptied out. No obvious sign of what's going in next. Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone knows someone who's looking for a cute storefront to rent. Of course it might already be spoken for.

Barbershop gossip from across the street is that Blue Shirt is going to expand into the space. No idea how accurate this is, of course...

I bet people don't tend to think of it as a place to go and sit and eat (rather than just getting things to go) because the space is so small right now, but maybe if they had a bigger space people would be more likely to go and sit and eat there.

back when the former owner still owned it (which was several years ago now), it was often packed. it's seemed to me like the customer base has dropped off over the past five or so years, but like i said above, maybe it's just that i happen to now be walking by it at times it's empty.

I'm one of those. The current space is just too small to feel like a comfortable place to sit and eat. if it got bigger, I'd probably go more often.

Anyone know how long ago it closed? (I don't walk on that block daily, so I didn't know it had closed until I read Leah's post.)

There had been a sign up in La Contessa saying that Shino Express (delicious cheap sushi!) was "COMING SOON!!" but that had been up there since I moved to the area (back in July/August)

Sign is still up. Don't know what's taking them so long.

While you're waiting, Taipei Tokyo serves sushi.

Asbestos in building and issues with landlord over who was responsible for the abatement.

It had gone dark around the 21st, but all of their stuff was still there as of then. I hadn't realized they'd closed, but the news made my day... one less crummy eyesore on the Square.

This isn't helpful, but I dropped them a note a month ago or so asking what was up -- just out of curiosity, as the place had been idle for so long. Never got an answer.

They never had any "Closing soon, must sell everything" sign that I can remember. Would they move and not bother telling the customers?

So Dollar Days was part of a national chain ? Never would have guessed that.

If you check out www.cpsc.gov for recalls of dollar store merchandise (some specifically "Dollar Days"), it looks like there just might not have been much left to sell!
